Are you ready for Propellerhead Reason on the Apple iPad?

According to Propellerhead CEO Ernst Nathorst-Böös, it’s a distinct possibility:

“The iPad is at least as powerful a computer as the ones we started making software for back in the 90s. And that’s pretty exciting!”

Of course, the version of Propellerhead Reason that came out in back in the days was a lot less powerful than the current version. An iPad version of Propellerhead Reason would have to leave out some of Reason 4’s features.

This is all vaporware at this point – but it’s still, as Propellerheard’s CEO suggests, “pretty exciting”.

Update: Thomas Tautz stand uns eben am Telefon Rede und Antwort zum aktuellen Stand von midipad. Dabei verriet er, dass aktuell mit einer Veröffentlichung Ende Mai/Anfang Juni geplant wird. Vorher soll eine kostenlose Beta über den App Store veröffentlicht werden. In der 1. Version werden die Bedienoberflächen noch nicht frei anzuordnen sein, geplant ist aber eine für den Benutzer möglichst freie Gestaltung in den kommenden Versionen.

Die mastercontrols sind aus jeder Ansicht einzublenden. Zusätzlich wird von unten ein weiteres Fenster einblendbar sein, in dem man zwischen den Views umschalten kann und erweiterte Funktionssteuermöglichkeiten (z.B. Aufnahmefunktionen) zur Verfügung gestellt bekommt. Noch konnte die Software nur auf dem iPhone getestet werden, dort läuft sie bereits sehr stabil und enthält fast alle Funktionen.

iPad Music Software: bleep!BOX 1.2.0 – a n electronic drum/synth beat box for the iPhone, iPod touch and now the Apple iPad – has been submitted to the App Store:

1.2.0 is a universal binary, meaning it runs on both the iPad and iPhone / Touch devices using the same executable. You won’t have to buy bleep!BOX again to get it on the iPad – if you already own it on the iPhone, you can use it on the iPad and take advantage of the bigger interface. 1.2.0 has a few feature additions – a delay effect has been added to each of the Synth parts (meaning you can get individual delays for those, in addition to the existing global delay). We also made it so you can tap and drag any of the top edit buttons on the SEQ page to edit their values. This makes it possible to do quick adjustments in one gesture. I also have included a number of bug fixes and the interface overall should run faster thanks to some rendering optimizations.

I decided to make bleep!BOX work in both portrait and landscape on the iPad. This ended up taking about 12+ hours to do yesterday, but I was worried that it might not be approved if I left the current behavior of forcing the landscape orientation. Overall, I think it’s a cool feature and I’m looking forward to seeing it in action on a real device.

It looks like bleep!Box – and a lot of other iPhone apps – will be a lot more usable on the iPad. Full feature list below.

If you have purchased Beatmaker for the iPhone or iPod Touch, it will run on the iPad. So right away, we know that you can make beats and sample on the iPad. That is good to know. The iPad has more to offer than the iPod Touch though, in that it is faster and has a larger display. There is a lot of opportunity here for Intua to possibly link up with another company to develop hardware that would work with a new version of Beatmaker specifically for the iPad.

Imagine having an attachment for the iPad similar to the Alesis ProTrack, that works with Beatmaker, but bigger, with XLR , Mics and possibly some buttons and faders. Having an external Record and Play button would be a cool feature. As well, the program has much more potential on the iPad to be a little closer to a complete beatmaking “Machine”.

iPad Music Software: Korg has announced that their popular Electribe·R has been reborn as a dedicated iPad app – the Korg iElectribe virtual analog beatbox (App Store link).

iPad Music Software: MxNM LE (for Mix N Match MIDI Limited Edition) is a $4.99 app that turns your iPad into a touchscreen control surface that will send MIDI control change messages to many popular music software programs via WiFi.

Die Präsentation des offenen iPad-Konkurrenten WePad bereitete den Entwicklern offenbar einige Schwierigkeiten, wie diese mittlerweile selbst eingestanden. Verschiedene Blogs und Medien hatten zuvor berichtet, dass auf dem WePad anstatt des Linux-Betriebssystem nur ein Video in Endlosschleife unter Windows gelaufen ist.

Demzufolge wurde insbesondere der Entwicklungsstand des Tablet-PCs in Frage gestellt, allerdings zeigt sich die Lage bei genauerem Hinsehen weit weniger dramatisch, als von manch anderer Seite dargestellt. Gegenüber heise online erklärte Hoffer von Ankershoffen, Geschäftsführer von Nefonie, dass es sich bei dem präsentierten Modell nicht um einen lauffähigen Prototyp gehandelt habe. Vorgestellt wurde ein aktuelles Modell, das aufgrund einer späten Freigabe vom Kölner Zoll erst wenige Minuten vor der Präsentation eingetroffen ist.

Die Kollegen von heise online bestätigen aber, dass auf einem älteren Vorserienmodell die WePad-Software lief und bedient werden konnte. Die Zweifel am Entwicklungsstand sieht Hoffer von Ankershoffen als unbegründet, bereits gegen Ende April soll das Gerät Journalisten zum Test vorgelegt werden. Somit bleibt es schlussendlich offen, wie weit der Entwicklungsstand des Geräts vorangeschritten ist – die genannten Probleme sind zwar nicht begrüßenswert, aber in solchen Vorabpräsentationen bei Weitem keine Seltenheit und dementsprechend kaum als Indiz für den aktuellen Entwicklungsstand zu werten.

Score one for standards. According to second-hand sources and a post to a public mailing list, the upcoming Apple iPad accessory adapter for cameras, the iPad Camera Connection Kit, will support audio interfaces that are compatible with the USB Audio Class. I don’t have official confirmation from Apple, and the adapter itself appears not to be shipping until later this month, so file this as “likely, but unconfirmed.” But it’s one to watch, and comes as a surprise to me. (Generally, camera accessory kits aren’t a way of providing audio expansion.)

Let’s assume, as these sources suggest, that USB audio devices were available via the standard stereo output (or even input) for the public Apple APIs for audio I/O. In that case, the other good news is that iPad apps would be able to support your third-party hardware without special modification of the software, or a signed hardware license agreement.

Most pro audio interfaces are not class-compliant; it’s more common to use custom drivers, even for USB 1.x-compliant interfaces. Custom drivers would be out of the question. But there are a number of interfaces that do provide class compliance, like the M-Audio Fast Track or Edirol UA-25. (I have a Cakewalk-branded, Roland-manufactured SPS-25 that works as a class-compliant device with the “advanced” mode on the back switched off.)

Incidentally, devices that support this spec will also easily work with Linux, and possibly upcoming updates to Android, if the latter adds similar USB host support. That means there’s now ample incentive for audio interface vendors to investigate providing class support, as it could mean more customers not only from iPad owners, but owners of other slates and tablets, too – including those we don’t yet know about. (Google tablet, anyone?) That further illustrates why up-to-date class descriptions for hardware are so badly needed (though it also, sadly, reminds us how much isn’t covered by these generic classes).

Before you get excited about connecting a MIDI keyboard to your iPad, I don’t know that this will mean support for the MIDI device class. But it’s nothing if not a reminder of the power of standards. (See also the Nintendo Wii remote, which enterprising musicians have used as a controller on multiple operating systems, thanks to its support for the Bluetooth spec.)

And yes, this means the prospects of the iPad becoming an all-in-one, live performance machine are looking brighter. DJs are still likely to be unsatisfied, as I doubt that this will allow separate audio cuing, but given that I didn’t see this coming, who knows?
