ZITAT

The next version of iOS – the operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch – will have an unexpected surprise for musicians: real MIDI support.

Apple’s iOS 4.2 update, due in November, includes some interesting new features that didn’t make Steve Job’s official announcement.

According to a report in AppleInsider, beta testers have found that iOS 4.2 adds support for the CoreMIDI framework to the operating system’s application program interfaces.

CoreMIDI could be huge for iOS music apps, because it provides standardized MIDI support. It is a built-in system that supports MIDI devices and how they communicate with other applications.

MIDI support means that the iPad could be a touchscreen control surface for any MIDI device; developers will be able to create multi-touch sequencers that control MIDI hardware; and you should be able to plug your MIDI keyboard into an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and play your iOS software synths.

CoreMIDI on iOS 4.2

CoreMIDI support should help make MIDI more plug-and-play on iOS devices.

Here’s what Apple has to say about CoreMIDI:

In Mac OS X, Apple provides a new set of system services, so that applications and MIDI hardware can communicate in a single unified way, using a single API.

MIDI services, which are low level, provide high-performance access to MIDI hardware devices. There is a driver model in the MIDI world that “talks” directly to IOKit, so your application has a direct path from the MIDI services API to the hardware.

Using this driver model, third-party manufacturers can create driver plugins that talk to IOKit. Those can then be loaded and managed by a server, which applications talk to through the Core MIDI framework.

The CoreMIDI framework provides the client-side API that applications use to interface to MIDI devices.

The primary goal of MIDI services in Mac OS X is to have interoperability between applications and hardware, so that everyone is working to the same standard. Other goals include providing MIDI I/O with highly accurate timing, as required by professional applications. This means from a musical point of view being able to get a MIDI event into and out of the computer within one millisecond, i.e., to keep latency under one millisecond, and also to keep jitter –– i.e., the variations in I/O –– under 200 microseconds.

Another goal is to provide a single system-wide configuration, i.e., knowing what devices are present, and being able to assign names to those devices, manufacturer names, and what MIDI channels they’re receiving on and so on.

The MIDI services are designed as an extensible system. Toward that end, a device can have any number of properties attached to it. And a device manufacturer can publish their particular properties of their device.

Developers should be able to code apps with MIDI support, rather than having to support individual interfaces. CoreMIDI could also open up using the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit for connecting existing USB MIDI devices.

Developers are already starting to support MIDI hardware on iOS, with devices like the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface, This trend is likely to explode, though, with CoreMIDI support.

It’s not clear yet how “baked” MIDI support will be in iOS 4.2. If you’re an iOS developer or if you’re testing the iOS 4.2 beta, let us know if you’ve done any MIDI testing yet.

iPhone, iPad & iPod touch Getting MIDI Support

With this news, iOS 4.2 just got a lot more interesting for musicians.

What do you think of the promise of standardized MIDI support on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch? And, if you’ve got one of these devices, what MIDI gear are you interested in connecting?

hardware > KEIN ARBEITSSPEICHER IN DEM SINNE,...

Moog Filtatron features include:

* Filter + LFO
* Amp (drive) + feedback for distortion
* Adjustable, time-syncable delay
* Sampler with adjustable playback speed, loop points, and live recording
* X/Y pads for tweaking and performance, plus preset sharing.

The Moog Filtatron lets you combine several sound sources and apply effects to them in realtime. Sound sources include line or mic input, looping sample playback, and an internal oscillator. Audio input should work via any adapter.

It’s Moog, it sounds good and it’s on the iPhone.

This is really going to torment the anti-iOS analog traditionalists.

The Moog Sound = Crack

And, as Kirn says, “It’s a lot of fun to use. This could be a gateway drug to Moog’s genuine analog gear for the mass market on iOS.”

Pricing and availability are to be announced. If Moog’s smart, though, they’ll release the Moog Filtatron for free and use it, like Kirn suggests, as the gateway drug to the Moog sound.

iPad Music Software: Sylo Synthesizer (App Store link) is a free iPad synth that lets you build sounds from basic waveforms, or capture them using the iPad’s built-in microphone.

Sylo Synthesiser features live time-stretching technology based on granular synthesis, and a suite of filters.

Options include:

* Speed up or slow down a recorded sound to use as an instrument
* With a regular wavetable synthesiser, higher-pitched notes are also faster, like chipmunks, and lower-pitched notes are also slower, as though they are moving through treacle, Enable “Sync Speed” feature, though, and lower or higher-pitched notes still play back at the same speed, keeping them in sync with each other
* Adjust the speed control even while you’re playing notes: Slow, stop or even rewind the sound in the middle of notes — without changing the pitch
* Granular synthesis allows you to create instruments or effects from a recording, that do not sound like the original, yet retain its realistic, natural sound
* Frequency modulation, ring modulation, echo/delay, distortion, and a low-pass filter with resonance control are available

Sylo Synthesiser is a teaser for Sylo Synthesizer Pro, which adds these features:

* Use existing audio files as the building-blocks of your instrument: import audio from wave, aiff, mp3 and aac/m4a files
* Save recordings to your iPad or to Dropbox1 online storage
* Save your new instruments to the preset list for fast acces

* If you decide to show 4 or 2 tracks instead of 8 the mixer-view will automatically show more parameters at once.
* 2 tracks-mode will show volume, send A+B and another parameter of your choice per track.
* We added “momentary solo/cue buttons”: a short tap on solo/cue will toggle it on / off, a long tap will toggle on when you begin the touch and toggle off when you lift your finger
* We added optional “relative faders”: Instead of jumping to your fingers position the faders will only move the amount that your finger moved before.

Transport

* Dedicated stop button
* Dedicated record button
* Tempo Control: Drag with your Finger over the BPM counter to increase / decrease the tempo. To change it faster start on the left side, to do it slower drag on the right side.

Graphic User Interface

* Inertia Scrolling in all Live-related modules (Clips, Mixer, Devices)
* Trigger, recording & stopping animations on clips.
* Moving one view from top to bottom or the other way around will no longer leave the old half empty. The views will switch.

Korg has updated iElectribe, its virtual drum machine for the iPad.

Here’s what’s new:

* iElectribe can now be played using external USB-MIDI devices
* An Auto Restore function has been added which enables the last edit status to be automatically restored
* A Backup function has been added that enables you to make backups of pattern data
* Now compatible with iOS 4.3
* A few minor bugs have also been addressed, improving operational stability

I haven’t had a chance to check out the new version of iElectribe, so I’m not clear on how extensive it’s MIDI support is.

If you’ve had a chance to try it out, leave a comment and tell us what you know.

iElectribe is currently $9.99 in the App Store.
