DJ Chang`s CV

Chang's DJ journey started back in the mid 70's during the Disco era in Rochester, NY. Unlike the majority of DJ’s experience first being at a nightclub, his was through his own Cuban family. Dancing and listening to Disco, Funk, Rock, and Salsa records till 6a.m. at his Mom's basement house parties. In the late 80's his love for dance music landed him a job at a local record shop in Miami called BPM Records. One, now superstar dj who would frequent the store was Danny Tenaglia resident at Cheers back then in 1985. It was one of those memorable nights at Cheers that infected him with the feeling of House Music for the first time at a nightclub.
His first exposure was when he was invited to do remixes and mixes for the legendary Rhythm 98 FM radio station in Miami back in 1985. It was through this medium that he was able to expand his talents into the nightclub scene in the area. The first venue being The Edge in 87, which was a weekly Thursday night featuring more 80’s synth Electro Body music, and Industrial Rock sounds. It was here where he got recognized in the Miami area as one of the leading progressive djs during that time. As the 90’s dawned Chang played for UK promoter Dave B.(later to promote Home [UK], & Space [Ibiza]), who was one of the first to produce parties built around the UK Rave concept on the Beach. One such party was the weekly Insomnia where Chang was a resident at from 91-92, which took place at this warehouse on South Beach. Chang also played at Dave’s parties in The Cameo Theater (now Crobar), and also his mega beach event Rain Dance.
In 92, his career took off when meeting the owner of Simon’s, a legendary late nightclub in Gainesville, Florida. It was here that he started his residency in the infamous Side Room of the club. All kinds of wild and fun people would hangout & dance in the Side Room, the difference here was that all musical genres were crossed. While the main floor stayed strictly to a more Progressive House/Trance/Breakbeat style, Chang blew the boundaries with a mixture of Deep House, Garage, Acid tracks, Acid Jazz, Raregroove, Classic Disco, and Hip Hop. Not only were musical boundaries crossed, but so were the people that ranged from Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Gay, and Bi. Because of the popularity gained in the Side Room, Chang eventually became one of the residents at Simon's larger main floor, and also later bar/lounge addition The Soulhouse from 1994-2000. This lead to playing with guest djs like Tony Humphries, Danny Tenaglia, King Britt, Little Louie Vega, Laurent Garnier, Doc Martin, King Britt, Layo & Bushwaka, Swayzak, Pure Science, Felix Da Housecat, Ritchie Hawtin, John Aquaviva, DJ Heather, Josh Wink, Marques Wyatt, DJ Disciple, Oscar G. & Ralph Falcon (Murk), Deep Dish, Terry Francis, Garth, Dubtribe, Farley & Heller, Ralph Lawson, Huggy, DJ Pierre, Cajmere/Green Velvet, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, John Digweed, Sneak, Roy Davis Jr. etc.
During this time Chang started his own underground House Music zine called E.909St., which featured articles on Florida’s club scene; and interviews with various local and international djs. Some of the djs to be featured in the zine throughout the years was Laurent Garnier, Murk, Josh Wink, Mark Farina, John Digweed… This lead to his organization of the E.909St. parties at Simons (FL), where he invited djs like Nelson “Paradise” Roman (Bottomline Records), and Jask (Large/Soulfuric Records) to play at. Later in 2000 he ventured out to the snow peaked mountains of Park City, Utah; where he worked as a resident & booking advisor at Club Creation. Here he was found playing at various events and film parties during Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival. Most notably the official New Line Cinema’s party for Hedwig & The Angry Inch, & Miramax’s Human Traffic party featuring Ritchie Hawtin & King Britt. Other guests in the past at Club Creation were Mark Grant, Andy Caldwell, Gene Farris, Chris Fortier (Balance Promote), Jask, Lloyd Alvarez, Skunk, Doc Martin, Juan Nunez (Wax Records), Russel Vargas (Popsicle Records), Mark Farina, Marques Wyatt, Three (Hallucination/Balance), Q-Bert, Wish FM, LTJ Bukem, Detroit Grand Pubas, DJ Craze, Pepe Deluxe, Banco De Gaia, De-La Soul, Damien Marley…
In 2002 he moved to the psychedelic coast of San Francisco where he produced a Dance Music TV show on San Francisco’s Public Access by the name of “House Nation.” Interviewing artists like Kaskade, Garth, Jeno, Markie, Thomas, Hesohi, DJ Adnan, DJ Spettro, Teddy Douglas (Basement Boys), Julie McKnight, David Harness, Q-Burn’s Abstract Message,.. It was here that he was offered by Julius & Jerimiah (3 Degrees Chicago) a residency for the 3 Degrees’ nights in SF. Alongside 3 Degree’s founders Julius, Jerimiah, Monna, & Felix you could hear Chang at the various events they put on throughout the city with Noah Radford (3 Degrees SF). Not too mention Chang also worked as Director Of Promotions for DJ Ruben Mancia’s Devotion, which takes place every Sunday night at The End Up in San Francisco. This is considered as one of San Francisco’s best house music nights at the moment; where guests like Danny Krivit, Little Louie Vega, The Basement Boys, Jay Sinister, Miguel Migs, Jay-J, Chris Lum, and Timmy Regisford grace the decks on a regular basis.
Chang is well known in the rest of the States where he has played regularly in places and parties such as Jack’s House with DJ Jask (Tampa, FL), 3 Degrees at Zentra (Chicago, IL), Devotion at The End Up (San Francisco, CA), Aquabooty at Rain (Miami Beach, FL), The Firestone (Orlando, FL), Kit Kat at The End Up (San Francisco, CA), Bar B at The Paramount (Santa Fe, NM), Juicy at The Crobar (Miami Beach, FL), Sno-Drift (San Francisco, CA), Zen Festival (Orlando, FL).
In the late 90’s he got together with DJ/Producer DJ Jask (Soulfuric Records) to release his first record release “Music Takes Me High,” which was put out on Erotic City Records. This lead to his second release on Swanky Records called “The Yellow Sun,” which also featured Jask’s first remix. Currently he has a release out on Care Recordings with Amit Shoham (Tarantic Records) called “Island Dreams,” which features a remix by DJ Adnan.
Finally, Chang is best remembered by his fans for his eclectic selection of music. A selection that consists of Soulful House, Afro-Latin grooves, and Classics. Not forgetting the bigger rooms, he also is known for playing anything from Tribal Progressive to Techno, Electro, and Acid House. It is this passion for various sounds and rhythms that keeps the dancefloors alive and full of anticipation when he is in the mix.
