Wilsonic : Reflecting Future

Wilsonic is an advanced music festival, held annually in Bratislava, Slovakia. Wilsonic presents a wide variety of modern music. The Wilsonic sound ranges from advanced pop to the most obscure of electronic music and everything in between. A truly unique event, Wilsonic is one of its kind in the area of Central and Eastern Europe.

Wilsonic Festival:
Wilsonic is an advanced music festival, held annually in Bratislava, Slovakia. Wilsonic is a spectacular celebration of today’s best modern music presented in a live context, connecting the best elements of music fused within the atmosphere of a concert, a club and a party. Wilsonic is a music concert, presenting a wide variety of modern music which transcend categorization. The Wilsonic sound ranges from advanced pop to the most obscure of electronic music and everything in between. An advanced music program defined as electronic music on an exploratory path across all genres; jazz, rock, indie rock, alternative music and even pop. The primary focus is on local Central and Eastern European artists, musicians and engineers sharing the stage with their critically acclaimed, international counterparts. Specifically, Wilsonic mandates new technological innovation in audio and visual fields. Creative use and abuse of technology by various different software and hardware wizards, is a primary focus of Wilsonic. A truly unique event, Wilsonic is one of its kind in the area of Central and Eastern Europe. With five years already under its belt, Wilsonic has a strong local audience and continues to develop its international profile. Wilsonic 2005 will be yet another successful fusion of East and West

Aim of Wilsonic
The primary goal of Wilsonic is to expose the most discerning of modern music to a broad Eastern European audience. The presentation of internationally well-known artists with local counterparts is intended to enable, and maintain an open dialog between the artists, engineers and musicians of Central and Eastern Europe and the world.

Wilsonic – festival in Central & Eastern Europe
It has barely been a year since Slovakia, alongside nine of its neighbours, joined the European Union. Bratislava is a primary pipeline into Western Europe. The shadows of former communism and a poor economy left Eastern and Central Europe with an underexposed music culture. Now, with the overwhelming growth and momentum of the region, an explosion of works from the East will now be presented to the world. Wilsonic is an instrument of this cultural export and exchange.

What Music Wilsonic represents:
Wilsonic has a clearly defined music mandate of being clearly undefined. Wilsonic is not an electronic, rock or pop festival. On the contrary, Wilsonic presents all musical genres with a few rules and exceptions. Wilsonic acts are chosen for their dedication to the future sound of music. Whether it be by the utilization and development of audio and electronic engineering and tools, by a unique fusion of genres, or by defining a new “extra-musical” original style. Unique and original acts ranging from well knowns to complete unknowns.

Wilsonic as a meeting of likeminded people:
Wilsonic presents an open meeting of central European cultures in an environment conducive to collaboration of the audience with the artists, and the artists with each other. Wilsonic is most-appropriately held in Bratislava, bringing a fusion of international culture, music and technology together in Europe’s central hub.

What does the name Wilsonic mean?
Wilsonov: In the year 1918, after the constitution of Czechoslovakia, Bratislava was briefly referred to as Wilson Town (Wilson Stadt, Wilsonov). The name tag was an initiative to establish the town as an independent European City. A city which does not belong to Czechoslovakia, Austria or Hungary. Wilson Town represented the fusion and diversity of its surrounding cultures. Sonic: Of or relating to audible sound. From Latin sonus, a sound.

History of Wilsonic:
Wilsonic is in its fifth year of operation. The festival has grown significantly in scale and influence and continues to emerge on the international scene with attendance numbers upwards of 4000 and growing. Wilsonic 2005 is the most highly anticipated to date and is expected to attract upwards of 5000 attendees.

micro.Wilsonic:
micro.Wilsonic is a series of smaller, more intimate satellite events which occur throughout the year. The micro.Wilsonic events feature one or two global headliners, alongside local artists.

Bratislava – The Little Big City
It’s been 15 years since the Velvet Revolution, more than 10 years of Slovakia’s independence with it’s lovely capital, „the little big city". And without doubt it is the best time for Bratislava, with the country being a new memberof the E.U. and the most progressive in the Central Europe. Bratislava lies in a hot spot (on the river Danube, one hour ride from Vienna, 2 hours from Budapest and 3 from Prague).
The small, but beautiful old town is full of cafés, bars and restaurants with a friendly crowd, attractive girls, cheap drinks and good food. A walk in the old town or the castle hill is a good choice for a lazy afternoon, and you can find nice medieval streets with a blend of Habsburg and communist era. Bratislava’s center has a car-free zone, the so-called “Korzo”, where you can enjoy all the nice things the city has to offer.
In summer all the pubs have a terrace, on the street in the pedestrian zone, and the atmosphere at that time is almost mediterranian.
There are plenty of pubs and cafés in the centre, but the circuit of Venturska and Michalska streets is a must for the liquid lover. A good place elsewhere in the old town is café Verne filled with young artists, good drinks and a nice interior. Even though the nights are hot the evening in café Verne is cool. Verne is next to VSVU (School of visual arts) on Hviezdoslavovo square. Don’t miss the restaurant Prasna Basta, located in one of the oldest buildings in town, the “Powder Tower” (www.prasnabasta.sk) - with a good variety of Slovak and international food, friendly waiters and a beautiful terrace garden (open May to September) hidden in between old houses. In the Powder Tower courtyard, you can also find the chill-out café Kut (Corner) with crazy parties on some Fridays and Nepal (www.nepal.sk), a small second-hand music shop with a good selection of music from all over the world.
You will enjoy Paparazzi, the fancy restaurant with tasty kitchen and a yuppie atmosphere it’s a meeting place for models and media people. Somewhat futuristically designed is Medusa, a large variety of delicious pasta and a good looking, friendly, happy crowd. The terrace of Medusa is under Michael‘s Tower, a beautiful part of the old town. A fine posh place to go is the People‘s, healthy designed restaurant and bar near the Opera.
If you find yourself lost and hungry at 4 o‘clock in the morning, a typical local low budget warm food is in the 24 hour diner Hviezda on Kollarovo Square, near the Presidential Palace.
On a sunny Sunday, the best place to go is Propeller, a small punk-style pub in the park on the opposite side of the river Danube (10 minutes walk from the old town over a futuristic bridge that you just have to see) with a nice view of the old town. Cheap beer and free rock, punk and reggae concerts, or you can try challenge the natives in frisbee in the nearby park.
Partytime is the weekend and the coolest allnighter around is Spojka (Connection) near the river, in the back of The National Museum (www.spojka.com), party style with local and international DJs and live acts as well. A little more extreme is U-club (www.ucko.sk), situated in an old war bunker under the castle hill, focused on techno, minimal or drum’n’bass. Another bunker and another club – Duna (www.duna.sk) features hip-hop, drum’n’bass, rock and even gothic parties. The Nu Spirit (www.nuspirit.sk) is the ultimate lounge bar, nu jazz beats every day, with appearence of the style‘s best local and international DJs.
The official site of the city www.bratislava.sk offers various info from the city majors in English, German, French and Russian.
Be sure to buy a bottle or two of Borovicka to amuse your friends and family back home. It’s a gin type of short drink made from berries with a mild taste, speed effect and no headache.
The best hotel in town is The Carlton SAS Radisson, located on Hviezdoslavovo Square, though it’s not cheap by any means. For cheaper accomodation, check out the communist-styled hotel Kyjev, or one of the botels (hotels on boat) on the river Danube. The cheapest option is a youth hostel like Backpackers (www.backpackers.sk) on Panenska street near the Presidential palace.

Transport to Wilsonic:
Easyjet (www.easyjet.com) offers cheap return flights from London Luton to Bratislava Airport.
Sky Europe (www.skyeurope.com) offers cheap return flights from London Stansted to Bratislava Airport.
Sky Europe offers cheap flights from Bratislava Airport to Barcelona Airport.
Vienna Airport is 40 km from Bratislava.
