The Zoo Project

Saturday 7th July will see The Zoo Project raise the temperature with Ryan Elliott, Mic Newman, Wbeeza! (Live), Funk E, Michael James, Eddie Leader, Nic & Kaleb, Defex, Jeancedric, Milou and Jonathan Tena!

Detroit's Ryan Elliott is a distinguished and internationally respected DJ, producer, remixer and one-half of Spectral Sound?s A&R team. Legendary residencies at Ann Arbor?s Goodnight Gracies and Detroit?s Shelter are how Ryan Elliott began his career. His reputation has grown steadily over the decade and he?s now well rehearsed in working crowds at clubs and festivals around the world, from NYC?s Guggenheim Museum to Barcelona?s Sonar Festival. With an impressive record collection, influenced by his hometown staples (Axis, Purpose Maker, M Plant, and UR) along with international labels such as Perlon, Playhouse, and early Kompakt he takes the crowd on a unique and captivating journey without fail each and every time.

Melbourne born Mic Newman alias Fantastic Man has gained star status in his home country. His rise to international prominence has been swift, breaking onto the scene in 2009 with key releases and remixes, including that of seminal influence; Booka Shade on their acclaimed Get Physical imprint, but most notably, his 'Sizzled Sally' EP. One of the highest selling releases on Stuart Geddes' Murmur Records. It was named 'EP of the month' in Berlin's Raveline magazine and caused a flurry of hype in the underground community, further exposing Mic's trademark deep and incisive take on House music. Follow up releases on Tsuba, Dirt Crew, 20:20 Vision?s sub-divisional; Fina Records, Freerange along with his ?Machine Love? EP on his return to murmur Records have ensured a committed following from tastemakers and DJs alike. Mic?s Fantastic Man alias has so far seen success on Wolf Music, Melbourne Deepcast, and his own ?Plastic Fantastic? EP on Detroit label Kolour LTD. His DJ sets consistently capture audiences and his appeal is continuously growing with worldwide dates scheduled in the calendar.

Wbeeza (pronounced double-u-beeza) is without a doubt one of the brightest young talents to have signed to the Third Ear label in the last few years. Coming straight out of Bermondsey, South London, Warren Brown has been spreading his gospel of soul and jazz fuelled improvised goodness across the globe, through his trademark energetic live performances. His sound is rooted in house music and releases for Detroit-affiliated London imprint Third Ear have piqued the interest of house music devotees of all stripes. His latest EP, ?Peckham Fly? has been gaining a lot of attention and rewind request on the road over the last year. Keeping things stripped back to the bare minimum a punchy rhythm base, interspersed with twisted vocals lean towards the modern end of the 'house meets techno' sound. Physically invested, constantly moving, usually with dark glasses or a hoodie obscuring his vision, the Wbeeza live show is something you can't help but dance to.

Monika Kruse has been showcasing her talents behind the decks worldwide for nearly 20 years. Berlin born she follows her own idea of techno-funk as a producer, promoter and label owner and is a regular at the world-renowned clubs Berghain/Panorama Bar and Watergate. Having played an active part in German club culture since 1991, starting as resident in Munich’s legendary Parkcafé club she became a member of the "Ultraworld" Crew that organised Techno events and eventually opened the Club Ultraschall. Founder of two record companies: Terminal M which has been her platform for energetic, upfront, kicking Techno and Electric Avenue Recordings housing accomplished producers such as DJ Rush, Miss Kittin, Patrick Lindsey and of course Monika Kruse’s most successful release so far "Latin Lovers”.

Her musical output as a producer led her to regular releases on labels such as Einmaleins, Ostgut Ton, Barraca Music and Buzzin Fly and on her own label Brouqade Records, which she started in 2007. Dana Ruh is no stranger to the underground scene. This year has seen the launch of new label ARAS, founded by Dana Ruh and Andre Galuzzi, the first release being their collaboration, Trambolla EP, which has received DJ support from the likes of Tanzmann, Tiefschwarz, Laurent Garnier, Agoria and Troy Pierce. Catz 'N Dogz are polish DJs/Producers Grzegorz Demiañczuk and Wojciech Tarañczuk. Since their first record on Trenton in 2005 the guys have appeared on lauded labels such as Trapez, Crosstown Rebels, Pokerflat, Boxer, Dirtybird, Leena and their own label Channels Records, with two quite aptly named, critically acclaimed full length artist albums on Mothership: Stars of Zoo and Escape from the Zoo. A clear break from convention and a further exploration of genres, the guys break free and run into the wilderness of street bass, disco, R&B, deep house, hip-hop and more and includes collaborations with heavy hitters such as Claude VonStroke. As DJs you are likely to find them playing disco/deephouse at the intimate parties they organize frequently in Berlin and Szczecin as well as tech-house and techno at festivals and big clubs all over the world. Back in 2003 they organized a club night in their hometown of Szczecin, Poland. This night soon became a residency and their reputation grew quickly. A radio show followed them on Szczecin’s ABC Radio allowing them to explore their creativity and gain a legion of fans. Soon after that, they began to produce records together as the techno centric “3 Channels,” eventually evolving into Catz 'N Dogz - a grooving, category-free mixture of modern music. Recently they have collaborated with Mothership and Get Physical and have also launched their new label PETS which aims to promote Polish artists.

Born in Poland, raised in San Jose California and educated in New York, Margaret Dygas began her DJing career in London in the 90s. Influenced by old school hip hop and New York house music she has found herself where she is most comfortable, from dub to techno and anything in between. As well as playing worldwide in countries such as Holland, France, Finland, Singapore and China she is a regular feature on London’s electronic scene. She can be found at legendary clubs such as Fabric, The End, The Key and Herbal. She is a resident at label night Underline and has been supporting growing underground parties such as Multi Vitamins, Run, Minimallondon.com events, Stink at the T Bar as well as Technique in Leeds. Her music has been well-received in Berlin where she is fast becoming a friendly face at clubs like Berghain's Panorama Bar, Arena, Club Der Visionare, Watergate, Kino International and House13. Last summer she was part of Cross Town Rebels mini-tour around Europe playing at Electrosplash in Valencia, Watergate, Berlin and Space in Ibiza. With a number of releases on respected labels such as Perlon, Power Shovel Audio and Contexterrior her production and DJing style continues to develop and blossom. The electronic-tech vibe of her present sets incorporates the deep and minimal sounds she loves but retains the driving funk of her musical past.

Giles Smith is an industry respected DJ/Producer, one half of the duo Two Armadillos and another half of the brains behind notorious London day rave secretsundaze. He has played at many of the UK’s most respected venues from The Key, Plastic People, 93 Feet East through to Fabric, Back to Basics and The Sub Club. Internationally he’s played at Panorama Bar, Watergate, Robert Johnson ,Rex Club, Love in New York and various clubs in Tokyo. With both of the Two Armadillos on board The Zoo Project is giddy with anticipation.

Inspired by hedonistic cutting edge clubs both in the UK and Ibiza, Giles and partner James Priestly launched secretsundaze in 2001. Few know this, but secretsundaze was one of the first promoters to host a party at Gala Night in Ibiza, our beloved Zoo! In a short period of time, secretsundaze became the hottest ticket in town and is now an international success hosting DJ’s such as Ricardo Villalobos, Carl Craig, Steve Bug, Luciano, Ame, Rhadoo, Cobblestone Jazz, Mountain People, Keith Worthy and Jus Ed.

On the production side its Giles’ Two Armadillos project with Martin Dawson that has gained the most attention. Over the last 3 years the duo have appeared on labels such as Dessous, BangBang!, Sthlm Audio, Buzzin' Fly, Motivbank, Four:Twenty, R&S,  and secretsundaze music. They have also completed remixes for Dessous (Dan Berkson and James What ft. Robert Owens), The Discowboys (Steve Bug and Vincenzo) and Mood Music (Kiki) and their releases have been remixed by the likes of Sascha Dive, Tobias and Andomat 3000. Giles’s tracks have been licensed to compilations such as Arpiar's mix for Circo Loco’s 10 Year Anniversary; Steve Bug’s “Bugnology 3”; Mathew Dear’s “Body Language” and Claude Von Stroke’s “At The Controls”. He has also mixed and compiled two critically acclaimed mix CD’s for secretsundaze alongside his co-resident James Priestley.

Under his own name, Martin Dawson has worked with some of the best labels in underground house including Cocoon, Crosstown Rebels, Get Physical, 20:20 vision, Off recordings and Moodmusic. Prior to this he had a fruitful career working under his alternative guise – King Roc – under which he released his debut album in 2009 to critical acclaim. Nominated by DJ Mag for Best UK Producer and Best Artist Album in 2009 his production  prowess is not going unnoticed. Although Martin loves to work in the studio his passion for DJing cannot be questioned, with an international career he has played worldwide from West and Eastern Europe to South America, Australia, Asia and Russia. Currently working with the likes of Glimpse, Andre Crom and Catz 'n Dogz and of course his continuing relationship with Giles as Two Armadillos we can’t wait to host King Roc unmasked as Martin Dawson at The Zoo Project.

Earlier this year Evan Baggs won over the hearts of the zoo with his smooth house set and we’re so glad to have him back!  Evan is a born and bred New York DJ who now resides in Berlin. Having gained a reputation through his sheer passion, consistently energetic track selections, clever and precise mixing he’s fast becoming a DJ in demand. He has played worldwide from Brazil to China and everywhere in between. His DJ sets are as exciting and diverse as his hometown and have gained him support from international DJ’s and producers, who recognize him as a legitimate up and coming talent.

GENIUS OF TIME (Alexander Berg and Nils Krogh) is a live show of oldschool meets newschool house, fusing the analogue sounds of beloved machines with modern technologies and possibilities. Steady grooves coupled with live instrumentation and improvisation in the club, putting out live synthesis and performances through space echos, lfo's, ring modulators, distortion units and chorus effects.

These tracks are then, after processing in the Aniara studios, pressed onto shiny vinyl and sent out into the world, hoping to find their way to open arms and some tender, loving care. Genius of Time remixes appear on labels such as Suol, Freerange, Stuido Soulrock, Undertones and Dessous !

TERRY FRANCIS - Since winning Muzik magazines "Best New DJ" award in 1997, Terry Francis has had what can only be described as a meteoric rise to fame. To those previously unfamiliar with his flawless mixing skills and instinctive ability to work a crowd it probably seemed as if he'd arrived out of nowhere. Fact is though, he had been blazing a trail through the underground for no less than ten years before the world at large sat up and took notice and his unanimously praised "Architecture" mix album helped put him on the map.

His sleek fusion of techno and house has made him a top British DJ, but Terry Francis has also helmed a series of solid productions, both as Housey Doingz (with Nathan Coles) and released under the monikers 2 Smoking Barrels, Blue Wig, Dattare, The Delinquents, G. L. F, Green Grass, Metal Dogz and T- Collective as well as productions under his own name. Alongside weekly dates worldwide, Terry's been a Saturday resident at London club Fabric since it first opened it's doors and his DJ sets have been a consistent highlight in Fabric's history, continually underlining his dual position as scene-stayer and tastemaker. An unwitting ambassador of the tech-house scene he has been in constant demand as a touring DJ, supporting the works of likeminded producers in the process. In this past year Terry has been making some new productions with his partner Klunk and will be releasing some long awaited new music under the alias Klunk & Zilly.

DROOG is the DJ collective of Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe. From their start 6 years ago, DROOG has steadily built a reputation as one of the leading purveyors of forward thinking dance music, in Los Angeles and beyond. The collective have become known for their respected parties that through the years featured leading international house and techno talent, from Magda, Jamie Jones, Steve Bug and Martin Buttrich to Dixon, all four memebers of Visionquest, Nicolas Jaar, Dyed Soundorom, Shonky and beyond. Droog have also masterminded showcase parties at WMC, DEMF, BPM and Sonar festivals.

Between 2007 and 2011, Droog had held down a residency at Avalon Hollywood, one of the biggest clubs in the US. At Avalon, they have had the chance to play alongside influences such as Richie Hawtin, Lee Burridge, Steve Lawler, Damian Lazarus, Tiefschwarz, Mr. C, Booka Shade, MANDY, Matthew Dear. More recently the Los Angeles collective has been focused on production work, with original material for Crosstown Rebels (released in September to wide acclaim) and Supernature (to be released in summer of 2012), remixes for Culprit, NOICE, Murmur, My Favorite Robot, Adjunct Audio, Noir Music and Get Physical. Other high profile projects include mixing the second installment of the Rebel Rave mix CD for Crosstown Rebels, released in November 2011. In May, Droog made their first appearance at the premier US dance music festival, Movement Detroit. This summer Droog will be playing high profile gigs at some of the world's most recognized dance venues including Fabric, Watergate and Space Ibiza.

Margaret Dygas was captivated by the British dance scene, she moved to London in the summer of 99. Her first job was on the door of Home, her day job was as a make up artist and she began to play out at parties and warming up in clubs. Then three years ago she decided to make this her full- time career. Margaret has been a regular feature on London’s electronic scene playing at clubs such as Fabric, The End, The Key and Herbal. She is a resident at label night Underline and has been supporting growing underground parties such as Multi Vitamins , Run, Minimallondon.com events, Stink at the T Bar as well as Technique in Leeds. Her music has been well-received in Berlin where she is fast becoming a friendly face at clubs like Panorama Bar, Arena, Club Der Visionaere, Watergate, Kino International and House13. Now making her first moves into production, her DJing style continues to develop and blossom. The electronic-tech vibe of her present sets incorporate the deep and minimal sounds she loves but retains the driving funk of her musical past.

San Soda is still a relative newcomer but has made such an impression in the last couple of years with his deeply soul inflected house music there are few that haven’t sat up and taken notice. Through releases on Red D’s We Play House imprint under San Soda and also FCL where he created the house gem that is "Let's Go' He’s been responsible for some of the deepest cuts of contemporary house and has played a significant role in the recent revival of proper house amongst a new generation. He recently teamed up with similarly youthful house aficionado Motor City Drum Ensemble for the sublime ‘Love Prescription’ EP on Delusions Of Grandeur. Detroit Swindle consist of Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets, 2 guys that, without actually growing up together, have had practically an identical musical upbringing. A vibrant mix of Motown-soul, funk, hiphop and jazz inspired them from an early age on and after a varied exploration through techno and house, they met each other by mutual interest in Detroit inspired deephouse. Detroit Swindle have a clear vision on the music they produce and play. If you can’t nod your head to it, it’s probably not theirs and they probably won’t like it. Their productions are best described as contemporary interpretations of classic soul tracks with melodical grooves, jazzy chords and bumpy bass-lines. So in short, if Marvin Gaye would have made house music, they would have been his biggest fans.

2011 is the year of their first release. With their ‘Starvin EP’ on Saints & Sonnets, they place themselves amongst highly acclaimed artists like Roman Flügel, Ethyl and Huxley. They are currently working on several remixes and releases, and are experimenting with their DJ/live performance. Shows are planned across the Netherlands, Germany and England.

On Saturday, September 1st we welcome “Two Armadillos” who are Giles Smith and Martin Dawson. Meeting at London's Phonica records where Martin was working at the time led to this blossoming partnership and friendship. Giles is one of London's most in demand DJs (also playing in many of Europe's hotspots) and has a deep knowledge of House and Techno. He is also co- resident and promoter of the legendary secretsundaze summer parties. You can find their music on such respected labels as Tsuba, Buzzin Fly and Dessous.

Doc Martin’s live sets truly bring people together. The variation in his style of music is endless. What makes him so different from the rest? A unique ability to spin everything from deep house vocals that have much depth and meaning to us all in some way, to his funky tribal Bass lines mixed with threads of acid, his passive collection of classics rare records that are only to be heard at his gigs. Doc Martin has developed the respect as a house DJ that so many of us admire. It is this respect that keepshim constantly touring; from New York to London, Japan, and everywhere in between. He has frequently played and was a resident at such clubs as, Fabric (London), Panorama Bar (Berlin) and Womb (Tokyo) to name a few. You can also catch him releasing music as his other Moniker(s) Sublevel/LADM/DoktorDub and Blakdoktor.

Finally we have Ray Okpara who has helped put Mannheim, Germany on the electronic music map, with a string of stellar productions on hot labels like Cécille, Oslo, Get Physical and Area Remote, he has an indomitable DJ style that has seen him rock out the world’s great modern clubbing arenas. Influenced by hip hop, funk and soul during the early 00's Rays distinctive style could be heard at his own hugely popular club night RAJO which he ran with good friend Johnny D. Moving to Berlin in 2005 saw Ray’s musical style blossom and DJ performances were soon accompanied by productions, such as remixes for 8-bit, his first EP, ‘Fumnaya’ on Lomidhigh Lmtd and releases like ‘Frozen on Yellow Ice’ (Arearemote) and ‘Loving Moonbauh’ (Drumpoet Community) were instrumental in Mannheim’s explosion in 2008. A crowd teaser and crowd pleaser, constantly rocking it with music to make you smile and lose yourself in the moment, Ray Okpara is set to groove up The Zoo Project this Saturday.

“What matters most, above all else, is what comes through the speakers," says Detroit's Ryan Elliott. "It must be the right track at the right time, delivered in the right way.” Nobody knows this better than Elliott, whose distinction as an internationally respected DJ, remixer, and one-half of Spectral Sound’s A&R team has grown steadily over his decade-plus behind the decks. They don’t hand out “DJ’s DJ” reputations at the club door, and Elliott’s is well-earned and well-deserved.

Ryan Elliot's sound remains unchanged: bassline-driven techno and house reduced to their essence, thoughtfully calibrated to drive crowds out of their minds. The time is right, the tracks are right, and Ryan Elliott is exactly where he needs to be.

Spencer Parker is one of Europe's leading DJs, his unique style of house and techno is in demand the world over and with his productions, remixes and re-edits being supported by names such as Ryan Elliott, Dinky, Ricardo Villalobos, Radio Slave, Dixon, DJ Deep, Gerd Janson and Zip, the future looks bright. Having already impressed both clubbers and promoters around the world to date, Spencer's diary for 2012 already includes return bookings at some of the worlds best clubs, such as Rex Club (Paris), Womb (Tokyo), Barraca (Valencia) Panorama Bar (Berlin) and The Zoo Project (Ibiza).

“I’m shy, nervous and anxious about life,” says Youandewan. You can tell that by his music, be it the doleful, dubby remixes of Maya Jane Coles, Gerry Read or Sei A he’s turned in, or the garage- tinged originals he has crafted for Skream’s Disfigured Dubz and London’s non-specific bass hub, 2nd Drop. Of course, there’s also the notable “1988” (the first thing he ever produced and which was never intended to see the light of day) and a remix of Dusky’s “Lost in You” which regularly gets spun in the dusty dungeons of Berlin’s Berghain. But none of these really sum-up the reticent Leeds lad, for his loosely house and bass leaning sound is forever on the move.

As a DJ, Youandewan’s cultured and considered sets have earned him a residency at Leeds establishment System, whilst he’s also a regular guest at Wax:On. Though he prefers hiding to over- hyping, for those who know, they know... Championed by the likes of legendary edit King Greg Wilson to new kids on the scotch block, The Revenge and The 6th Borough Project, he has managed that rare feat, to slide in to a market that seemed flooded and make a real impact.

Following a mega-hyped remix of Dan Black’s ‘Symphonies’ on Polydor, Duff Disco has gone on to release edits of The Thin White Duke, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Mark Morrison, Steve Miller Band and Stretch that have all graced the top sales charts on Juno.

We can’t believe it’s that time of year already, time flies when you’re having fun!
We’ve loved having you all on board this summer and it’s true, there’s no Zoo without you!
So, lets go out with a bang and have one final, wild, Zoo Project Ibiza 2012 gathering!

We are proud to present Terry Francis. He’s been blazing a trail through the underground scene for over 10 years, with Releases on Pagan and Eukahouse, a long standing residency at London’s Fabric club and his own notorious night Wiggle, one of London’s best loved underground techno nights.

Aside from the continued success of Wiggle and the release of his "Architecture 2" mix album on Pagan, the last few years have seen Terry's career continue to blossom. With his seamless mix of deep, dubby house and shimmering techno sensibility Terry is known for his instinctive ability to work a crowd. Playing from the heart he blurs the lines between past and present to create the future! Since winning Muzik magazines "Best New DJ" award in 1997, Terry Francis has had what can only be described as a meteoric rise to fame and perhaps more than anything else it was unanimously praised "Architecture" mix album that really put him on the map. His most recent releases such as How Can Something So Deep, 3 Steps Left and Freedom EP have gained support from the likes of John Digweed and Lee Burridge in particular.

Tony Lionni has had a busy couple of years releasing on key labels such as Freerange, Madhouse records, Defected records, Ostgut-ton, Versatile, Mule Musique and of course Francois K’s legendary Wave Music. His musical style is a perfect fusion of Detroit tinged techno and brooding deep house and has gained him plaudits and support from press and DJs alike.
A resident of Manchester in its 1980s Chicago / Detroit acid house heyday, Tony Lionni could be found partying at the Hacienda with the best of them. Now resident in Berlin, the producer has managed to find the meeting point between these three great cities. On long-overdue debut album "As One" he fuses the clean lines of Berlin with the warmth of Detroit and jacking dancefloor sounds of Chicago. That's not forgetting the big piano line, of course, as featured on his massive Ostgut Ton release "Found A Place" (re-jigged here as "Found Another Place"). This is music that soothes your soul and moves your body at the same time. Quality tech-house music for the heart.
