We Love… Homelands 2003 was an even more international affair than usual; the performers came from every corner of the globe to work the turntables under cover of canvas in the Hampshire countryside. France offered up (Cassius, Pedro Winter…), the US (Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills), Brazil (DJ Marky), Denmark (Junior Senior), Belgium (2 Many DJs), Australia (Dexter) and not forgetting the king of the Birmingham outback, The Streets.

Bill Gilles predicted a mud fest, but the weather gods were smiling over the Bank Holiday weekend and the rains never came. As gate opening time approached the surrounding transport routes were swamped by around 33,000 punters who had taken the decision to spend the night in a field listening to their favourite DJs.

In the humungous Live Arena it’s the turn of The Streets, “Oi! Oi! Your night begins when I kick this ball…” Mike Skinner announces, arms reach skywards as a beach ball flies over a packed Live Arena. He eggs the throng on further, cheekily motioning with his finger to his mouth and then his nostril. The irony of it all is that these geezers don’t need any encouragement – their night started when it was still, umm, day. Anticipation is sky high as he paces the stage, beer in hand, B&H wedged between his lips. Now quite a veteran of the live stage he’s fast to connect with the crowd, bantering with Calvin and being as mischievous as ever. The opening strings of ‘Turn The Page’ get the mob jumping and every mouth in the arena knows the words.


Other big news in the Live Arena comes in the form of Groove Armada, complete with gigantic sexy lady visuals and trombone antics. The crowd lap it up, with the classics like ‘I See You Baby’ and their housed up version of ‘At The River’ fitting beautifully alongside the more recent ‘Superstylin’’ and new single ‘Easy’. Audio Bullys deliver a double dose of action, performing live early on and then later putting in an unscheduled DJ appearance at the Radio 1 Outdoor stage where they treat the crowds to an exclusive play of their new Groove Armada remix.


Elsewhere fop haired Frenchman and Daft Punk manager Pedro Winter dons his DJ hat and hooks up with Jacques Lu Cont to form a two-man tag team in Homelands’ designated eclectic centre, Arena 5, weaving 80s kitsch like Steve Miller Band’s ‘Abracadabra’ with Lu Cont’s infamous mix of Felix da Housecat’s ‘Silver Screen Shower Scene’ and whipping the masses into a frenzy.

Grandmaster Flash is every bit the ringmaster, effortlessly working the crowd with a proper block party vibe and taking us a funk excursion from the 70s through to the 90s with the help of ‘Grandmaster Bez’ – his jacking sidekick. “Hey, lets have this mic on” he requests on his entrance (it’s already on), “I need to speak to my people.” Whetting appetites with a slice of that famous scratching, he bangs in with Chic’s ‘Le Freak’. Later he asks, “Who thinks Michael Jackson is still the king of Pop?” before slamming in ‘Billie Jean’, bigging up the “old skool” and continually ordering the crowd “wave your motherfuckin’ hands in the air!”

Runner up for fastest scratching finger in the west is Brazil’s DJ Marky whose rapid and furious beats give the video monitors double vision in the Movement Arena, but runaway festival favourites are Belgian brothers, 2 Many DJs (Soulwax), who take to the stage in Arena 5 with a hatful of innovation. Who else would have the nerve to utilise The Cult ‘She Sells Sanctuary’, The Stooges ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’, and even DOLLY bleedin’ Parton ‘9 to 5’? Melding the lot to energised, supersonic propulsive beats. Recreating the ethos of last year’s PIAS album on which they chopped up 46 tracks in just 62 minutes, they represent the closest the DJ world has ever to the spirit of punk, but make no mistake… this was no intellectual exercise. Above all, 2 Many DJs are about letting rip… Such was the crowd frenzy during their set that security - fearing casualties - were liberally handing out water.


2 Many DJ’s may be laying down the gauntlet to the legions of fools following pointless rules but in contrast anyone who can remember seeing the Chemicals back when they delivered super phat, block rocking energy at unhealthy decibel levels, was likely to be disappointed by them this time around. The linear, hypnotic flavours in Arena 1 were… well, almost trancey. And no amount of flash lasers could disguise the fact.

Beyond the arenas, it was the BBar that kept the masses bouncing until the sun came up with a live performance from Freaks and a back-breaking 4- hour set from Derrick Crater who served up an addictive diet of twisted disco for the assembled masses. Media types retreating to the safety of the VIP arena came under attack from the breakdancing delinquents, the Cuban Brothers and the Back II Basics crew. Most recurring vinyl of the festival came in the form of anything by Justin Timberlake - Clips assisted ‘Like I Love You’ popped up on more than one occasion as did ‘Rock Your Body’, which surfaced in numerous sets and never failed to set the crowd alight thanks to Sander Kleinenberg and Oakenfold’s remixes.

In the aftermath at dawn, as the speaker stacks went quiet, the remaining hardcore slipped on their shades and made a break for the car parks declaring the festival season well and truly open and what a blinding kick off…
