A Florida International University fraternity has been suspended and is being investigated after screenshots of Facebook posts revealed photos of naked women, suggestions of possible drug use and hazing.
Screenshots of Facebook posts allegedly made by FIU's Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity or "Pike" brothers were distributed to the Miami New Times and to the university through an anonymous email. Pi Kappa Alpha is a frat that historically prides itself on community service and leadership.
"I think it's a good thing they got in trouble because they deserved it," said freshman Cynthia Rodriguez, who is interested in pledging a sorority.
"That's the only frat that I've ever heard about. I went to a party and it was like nasty," said Laura Gonzalez, who remarked that the fraternity had a reputation.
Several posts referred to a "pike pharmacy."
"30 mg of addy 10 starting tomorrow," another post reads, referring to Adderall. The drug prescribed for ADHD is sometimes abused by college students to pull all-nighters.
FIU released a statement that read in part, "The university is taking this information very seriously because it suggests possible Student Code of Conduct violations. The university took prompt action and placed the fraternity on interim suspension pending the outcome of investigations by appropriate university departments, including the police."
The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity's national headquarters in Tennessee said the FIU chapter would fully comply with the temporary suspension and subsequent investigation.
Campus police will also look into posts that seem to suggest hazing was going on. "Make a pledge wash your car – hazing is amazin" one of the posts read.
And students said they were offended by photos of naked women that were shared, likely without the women's permission or knowledge. A comment on one of the pictures suggested the person in the photo was underage, and only 17 at the time it was taken.
"That was really messed up and me being a girl – whatever happens to them they deserve it," said Rodriguez.
The freshman went on to say that one group of people's mistakes shouldn't reflect poorly on all Greek life.
"Just because they did that doesn't mean every frat is like that," she said.
When asked how much of what the screenshots suggest is part of greek culture, Josh Labrada, who is in a different fraternity, broke it down.
"Parties yes, drugs no, smacktalking yes. It's a little bit of yes's and no's," he said.
He added that the brothers in the fraternity are known as the "popular jockey party boys."
It's supposed to be social media 101 that what you share online, regardless of your privacy settings, doesn't necessarily remain private. One group of college students may have learned this the hard way.
"You guys shouldn't have done that and you're stupid for posting it online," Gonzalez said.

What the Crowdfunding Boom Means for Franchising By Jason Daley | Entrepreneur – Mon, Aug 19, 2013 7:00 PM EDT

watches When Tom Perez left the Navy in 2010 after 10 years of service, he thought his experience as a military police supervisor would easily translate into a job in law enforcement. That wasn't the case. After applying for more than 100 positions around the U.S., the 32-year-old gave up on that dream and started looking at franchises. When he applied for a Meineke Car Care Center in Pensacola, Fla., he was quickly accepted. With a 25 percent discount on the franchise fee for veterans, and 75 percent funding through the company, he was in much better shape financially than most franchisees, who still struggle to find credit in the commercial market.

copy watches But Perez knew that despite his advantages, his first year in operation would be tough. Slow sales or unforeseen circumstances could easily jeopardize his new business. So he signed up with Boost A Hero, a program sponsored by the franchise crowdfunding platform Sprigster that allows friends, family and appreciative strangers to donate cash to help veterans open franchises. His Sprigster campaign helped Perez raise almost $7,000 from 34 donors in the spring and summer of 2012. While the money was not make-or-break, it did give him the confidence to go ahead with the business.

copy watches "It definitely made me feel like other people were invested in my project," he says. "I still get e-mails from people who boosted me from out of state, and donors who live nearby come to the shop for just about everything that needs to be done to their cars."

replica watches It's a nice story about how crowdfunding is coming to the franchise world's aid. It's also, so far, one of the only stories.

fake watches Crowdfunding has made a big splash in the last few years as sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have helped entrepreneurs launch donut shops, produce albums and create smart watches; theoretically, it's a perfect vehicle for franchising. And the franchise community, still suffering from the never-ending credit crunch, is eager to embrace it, believing it could help reenergize unit sales. But the current generation of donation-based crowdfunding platforms doesn't mesh particularly well with the franchise model. Donors are interested in funding new products and creative or cutting-edge businesses, not in subsidizing sandwich shops and quick lubes. Also, the small amounts raised through crowdfunding--typically a few thousand dollars--are not enough to replace bank loans or other financing needed by aspiring franchisees.

cheap watches But equity-based crowdfunding--in which investors buy a slice of a small business--could be quite useful to franchisees. The JOBS Act, signed into law last spring, includes a provision that will make it legal for small businesses to solicit crowd-based investments of up to $1 million. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is currently working out the details on how to implement the law, and the decisions it makes are critical: If the regulations are too burdensome, they could put the kibosh on crowdfunding for franchises before it even starts. If, however, the SEC's rules are reasonable, they could open up a whole new path to franchise ownership.

A Natrual Fit
"We certainly believe crowdfunding has tremendous potential for franchise finance specifically," says Mark Mohler, a Florida business lawyer and CEO of Sprigster, which is currently donation-based but could convert to equity crowdfunding once the SEC releases its rules. "It provides for the true democratization of private equity."

Daniel Gorfine, director of financial markets policy and legal counsel at the Milken Institute, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based think tank that investigates innovations in capital markets, has co-authored several reports on the JOBS Act and securities crowdfunding. "There are certain things that make crowdfunding and franchising a natural fit," he says. "Number one, the size of the investment from the franchisee is not so great that it would exceed the $1 million limit. Next, most franchisees aren't interested in seeking late-stage investments like some small businesses. Having tens or hundreds of shareholders sometimes scares away venture capital groups, but that doesn't really matter here.

"But the most important thing," he adds, "is that crowdfunding creates a natural clientele. If you start out with 100 or 1,000 local investors, it might be a nice base of customer support and people invested in your success. The investors can see the property and business, and that adds enhanced credibility to the investment."

Gorfine also believes crowdfunding could become a novel way for franchisors to screen candidates and assess demand for their products. "There could be a situation in which a franchisor does a prequalification contingent on a candidate being able to successfully raise money from crowdsourcing," he says. "A franchisor could get feedback about how desirable a particular franchise would be in a certain location. The local community could tell them if they want a coffee shop on this corner or not. They could tell a franchisee, 'If you raise a certain dollar amount or number of investors, we'll be able to do a transaction with you.'"

Jonathan Sandlund, who runs online research and advocacy platform TheCrowdCafe, contends that crowdfunding could be a major step forward for equal opportunity. "This has an enormous potential to bring access to capital to franchisees without networks of wealth," he says. "Banks are really pulling back, and right now if you need $50,000 or $150,000 to start a franchise, you have to be wealthy or be connected to wealthy friends and family to get it. This will put people on equal footing."

Sandlund also argues it's a great opportunity for investors. "Studies show that only 13 percent of Americans trust the stock market. But there's really no other place to go with your money," he says. "They can get 0.5 percent from their checking account, or go into bonds, which have been weak also. With crowdfunding there will be an opportunity to invest locally."

Quality Control
Despite the potential for opportunities on several fronts, Gorfine points to problems that could arise from equity crowdfunding. Franchisees might intentionally or inadvertently promote their established franchise brand as being a less risky investment than a mom-and-pop shop, putting them at risk for charges of fraud. At the same time, if crowdfunding loosens access to capital, franchisors might start to greenlight franchisees and locations that they otherwise wouldn't, creating risk and weakening their brands. And if franchisees aren't investing their own cash, there's a chance they won't take their work as seriously as people who have dumped their life savings into their businesses.

"A lot of this is going to depend on the quality control of the franchisor," Gorfine points out. "Those that operate efficiently and have good quality control will have a better chance of doing well, vs. a franchise willing to grant a store to anyone able to come up with the capital."

In other countries, including Australia and the U.K., debt- and equity-based investment crowdfunding has been implemented successfully. Sandlund's TheCrowdCafe has aggregated a global database of more than $300 million in crowdfunding transactions, across six platforms, that show no incidents of fraud.

Other models, including peer-to-peer lending, have demonstrated that crowd-based investments aren't as risky as critics once feared. Lending Club, for example, has coordinated $1.6 billion in loans between investors and borrowers since launching its online platform in 2007, including $54 million in small-business and franchise loans averaging $15,000 to $18,000. Scott Sanborn, Lending Club's chief operating officer, says crowdsourced funding is one of the few viable options left to small-business owners. "There really aren't a ton of great options out there. Entrepreneurs can turn to family and friends or business credit cards, which still have high costs and variable rates," he says. "I think this is a space where there is real need. And I don't think anybody has jumped in with both feet to fill it on any sort of large scale."

The big question is whether the SEC rules will be favorable to franchise crowdfunding. Despite a year of hearings and public comments on the subject, no one really has a clue about which way the regulatory agency is leaning. The International Franchise Association (IFA) came out in support of the JOBS Act last year and is hopeful that the rules will be beneficial to franchisees. "There's an ongoing lending shortfall, and we believe any effort to jump-start new businesses or franchises is going to help the economy," says Matthew Haller, the IFA's vice president of public affairs and chief of staff. "The SEC is moving slower than we anticipated, but it's important to get things right when you have a new initiative. We're eager for the rules to come out."

TheCrowdCafe's Sandlund believes certain banks and investment firms may be trying to delay the SEC and convince them to limit crowdfunding. "There are definitely people trying to burden the process who are beneficiaries and incumbents of our current inefficient investment system," he says. "But it's our right to walk into a casino and gamble or buy a house that may lose equity. Who's to say we can't risk our money in a local business or startup? It's opposed to our country's values. Currently there's not equal opportunity in our financial markets. It has to change, and it will. And if it's not done right the first time, we'll have to go back and fight for it some more."

watches Leon Cooperman’s Omega Advisor’s, a hedge fund with $8.9 billion in assets under management as of the end of July, sold stakes in some of the largest gold and silver ETFs during the second quarter after establishing those positions in the first quarter.
cheap watches Omega sold $13.9 million in the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) , $4.39 million of the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) and $4.35 million of the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEArc:GDX) in the second quarter, report Eric Lam and Katie Brennan for Bloomberg.
swiss watches Gold and silver plunged during the second quarter, sliding 23% and 32%, respectively. Those declines led to massive outflows from gold ETFs such as GLD. Once the second-largest ETF in the world, GLD is now fifth among U.S.-listed ETFs. As of the end of July, investors had pulled $19.8 billion from GLD. Metrosexual goes mainstream as men outspend women on footwear
A new generation of men are achieving the impossible and out-spending women on
footwear.

clshoes
Husbands have complained for decades about their wives' obsession with shoes -
be it the constant shopping sprees or the eye-watering price for the latest
pair of Christian Louboutins or Jimmy Choos.

authentic christian louboutin on sale
But a new report claims men are now muscling in on the wardrobe space
traditionally reserved for a lady's killer heels, boots and flats.

christian louboutin wedding shoes
Mintel will today reveal 25-34 year-old males have spent an average of £178 on
everything from shoes to trainers and sandals in the past year, while women
of the same age spent a mere £171.

christian louboutin shoes discount sale
The difference is even greater among 16-to-24 year-olds, with younger men
spending £154, 15 per cent more than females of the same age.

christian louboutin sale
Men aged 35-to-44 spent £157, against £138 for women.

Mintel said the staggering statistics illustrated the rise of the designer
trainer sold in outlets such as JD Sports Fashion and Schuh as well as the
desire for a top of the range pair of shoes for work. JD claims its younger
customers can buy up to nine pairs of trainers a year.

But Richard Cope, the market research specialist's principle trends analyst,
added the shock figures confirmed that metrosexuality was now "in the
mainstream".

He insisted that younger men than are more worried than ever before about
their appearance, are taking more time to "groom" and staring at the mirror.

He said: "Taking pride in and taking greater confidence from maintaining a
well groomed appearance now defines what it is to be 'a man' in today's
society.

"Rather than being in a minority, men who buy grooming products to boost
self-esteem or feel more attractive are now in the majority."

He added: "Metrosexuality has succesfully moved into the mainstream.

"We're seeing men occupy previously 'feminine' space in the home - spending
more time on housework and parenting - but also as consumers, embracing
yoga, beauty goods, and the act of shopping itself."

Previous studies have documented women's desire for shoes of every shape,
size, design and colour. A report earlier this Spring claimed half of women
have more than 20 pairs, with 14 per cent owning more than 50. Mintel
admitted women are still more likely than men to buy three or more pairs of
shoes a year, led by females in the north-west of England.

But it claimed younger women were beginning to cut back while the price of
pumps and flats were coming down as high street chains such as Primark grow
their share of the market.

There have been growing signs of the emergence of metrosexual man. Mintel
earlier this year claimed that a quarter of males now enjoy actually
shopping. Record numbers of men are also using facial moisturiser, eye gels
and lip balm.

Retail consultants Verdict last night said the fashion industry had long
coveted male shoppers, and the forecasts were that men will continue to
spend more on clothing and shoes over the next five years.

Maureen Hinton, Verdict retail analyst, said: "It's always been said that if
you could get men to spend more on fashion it would save the clothing
industry, as traditionally they spend half as much. But you are seeing men
taking much more of an interest in the way they look now."

Mintel said over 45 year-old men were far less interested in shoes than their
girlfriends or partners, and spent far less.

London men were more likely to buy sandals and flip flops, while men in the
Midlands, north-west and Yorkshire were more likely to buy trainers.

Across both sexes, the footwear market rose nearly 5 per cent to £9 billion in
2012, up 5 per cent. Spending on repairs rose 31 per cent as more of us took
a pair of shoes to the cobblers - for a new sole.

Zurich begins experiment with drive-in 'sex boxes'
Zurich opens drive-in 'sex boxes' in a new experiment with its legal prostitution trade

watches In this Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 photo, a poster hangs in an open, wooden, garage-style “sex box” in Zurich, Switzerland. Prostitutes will be concentrated in a small city park built for more than USD $2 million in the Altstetten area of Zurich. It officially opens for business Monday. Prostitution is legal in Switzerland, but Zurich restricts it to certain areas, and is experimenting with the drive-in facilities to relocate the activity and improve safety and sanitation. The public had its first view of the completed facilities on Saturday. (AP Photo/John Heilprin)

fake watches ZURICH (AP) -- No car, no sex.

swiss watches That's the rule for an experiment Zurich is launching Monday to make prostitution less of a public nuisance and safer for women.

top brand watches Switzerland has long been famous for its mountaineering, chocolate and precision watches, but a lesser known aspect is its legal prostitution since 1942, for which its largest city is one of the main centers in Europe.

Fashionably teak-colored open wooden garages, popularly called "sex boxes" by the Swiss media, will be open for business for drive-in customers. The several dozen sex workers who are expected to make it their new hub will stand along a short road in a small, circular park for clients to choose from and negotiate with. The park was built in a former industrial area nestled between a rail yard and the fence along a major highway.

The publicly funded facilities — open all night and located away from the city center — include bathrooms, lockers, small cafe tables and a laundry and shower. Men won't have to worry about video surveillance cameras, but the sex workers — who will need a permit and pay a small tax — will be provided with a panic button and on-site social workers trained to look after them.

As far as Daniel Hartmann, a Zurich lawyer, is concerned, it's a win-win situation.

"Safety for the prostitutes. At least it's a certain kind of a shelter for them. They can do their business, and I respect them," he said. "They do a great job, and they have better working conditions here. ... They're not exposed to the bosses, to the pimps, in here."

On Saturday, Hartmann was one of several hundred residents, including many women and a small throng of journalists, who flocked to the only "open house" that Zurich will offer to give the public a better idea of how its taxpayer money has been used.

Most of the visitors said they came out of curiosity and haven't really come to terms with the idea, but hope it will at least improve safety. Others were amazed and a bit amused that a whole group of strangers would spend a rainy afternoon openly discussing professional sex.

Brigitta Hanselmann, a retired special needs schoolteacher from Embrach, Switzerland, said: "I have to think about it for a long time, because it's so incredible that a city offers that to the men, and it's interesting that there are many, many women here who are looking at it." She called the sex boxes "an effort to control a thing that you can't really control."

Voters in Zurich approved spending up to 2.4 million Swiss francs ($2.6 million) on the project last year as a way of relocating the sex traffic away from a busy downtown area where it had become a public nuisance and safety concern due to lack of sanitation, aggressive men, and associated drugs and violence. The city, which only allows prostitution in certain areas, also plans to spend 700,000 francs ($760,000) a year to keep the sex boxes running.

Jean-Marc Hensch, a business executive who heads a neighborhood association in another part of Zurich, said he hopes the sex boxes succeed because otherwise the prostitutes might return to his area. He also cited the disgusting lack of sanitation in other city areas where prostitutes and their clients defecate and urinate in the streets and gardens, or have sex in the open because they have nowhere else to go.

"It's an experiment," he said. "It was absolutely urgent to find a solution."

The drive-in garages, or sheds, have no doors to shut and come equipped with an emergency call button on the passenger side of the structure that sets off a flashing light and a loud alarm inside an adjacent office building where the city will post social workers specially trained to provide a measure of security. The Zurich police say they will beef up patrols around the perimeter to protect the sex workers when they leave and enter.

Modeled after the drive-in brothels used in several cities in Germany and the Netherlands, which have had mixed success improving safety, the sex boxes will be open daily from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. The city painted the outdoor bathrooms in soft pink and blue, strung colorful light bulbs among the trees and posted creative signs encouraging the use of condoms to spruce the place up a little and make it seem more pleasant.

"We built the place to be secure for the sex workers. It also had to be discreet for the sex workers and the clientele," said Michael Herzig of Zurich's social welfare department. "But we thought if we build the place, we can also make it look good."

Along with improving safety for prostitutes, the sex boxes are seen as a way to curb illegal trafficking among crime syndicates. Prostitution, escorts and massage parlors are a thriving business in a nation with wealthy and international clientele and tourists.

Zurich requires that street sex workers register with city and health authorities, and it offers health checks and requires that sex workers be at least 18 years old, in keeping with a Council of Europe convention on protecting children from exploitation and abuse.

In Switzerland, anyone who works in the sex trade must be at least 16, the legal age of sexual maturity. The income is taxed and subject to social insurance like any other economic activity.

But some cities have their own rules and some of the 26 Swiss cantons (states) have adopted separate legislation on prostitution. A special unit of the cantonal police force, usually the vice squad, carries out inspections of prostitutes in red light areas.

No video surveillance was installed at the sex boxes, so as not to scare off business, but also because police and city officials concluded after studying the handful of other such facilities in Europe that the only thing that would improve safety is an on-site security presence. To use the place, sex workers also must obtain a special permit, at a cost of 40 Swiss francs ($43) a year, and pay 5 francs ($5.40) a night in taxes, which helps the city offset maintenance costs.

"We can't solve the whole problem of exploitation and human trafficking," said Herzig, "but at least we want to reduce the harm, especially the violence."
