Interview Masomenos

A polar opposite to Minus' 'Rothko does Logan's Run' label aesthetic but no less infectious, Masomenos have utilised the value of their effortlessly cute cartoon animals to craft an image for their brand that defies the trend labels follow today. The yellow crocodiles and blue cats which adorn their records, such as their fabulous new Long Player 'Balloons,' could perhaps look conventionally better suited to hipster tees. But then again that's because they are as well. Using their combined creative wealth Masomenos are building a micro empire, all under one little roof, which is Paris' Masomenos store.

I wanted to investigate how they managed to become house music's cutest couple, consistently make endearing work in multiple creative facets and still making thumping house music, all without not wanting to strangle each other. Quite easily, it seems...

What made you put cute animals on your sleeves?
Joan: Well, we both come from an image background. But music and image just go together. We started Masomenos as a playground for our creativity and to have fun with. We made a logo, and started doing some animations, a web site and a Masomenos mix that became a draft to Bon Voyage. I made a drawing for the mix with lots of animals on it. Then Adrien got pretty obsessed with the idea of having a t-shirt with that little bird so we worked it into a print, and 'Le Poulet' was born, as was the aesthetic.

And your store?
The shop idea was more of an opportunity we seized, to get a local place for not much money. It was a great way to show our all of our different fields of work.

So who gets stuck with all the shitty admin jobs?
We both have skills for different boring stuff, and even if we hate doing them, we know we have to! And we both rely on the other one to do their nasty job that they're good at! Adrien handles the studio, the music and label stuff, and I'm more into digging crates, graphics and artwork, printing and Beatport uploads.

And do you ever fight over who gets to do the fun stuff?
The only thing we fight over is the time we can play! We are gluttons for music, and always want more. As we do two different acts under the same name, we usually have an hour and a half each, but sometimes we jump in and frustrate one another! We try not to do it, but...Masomenos

How do you incorporate all of these hobbies into the Masomenos music?
It's all really organic. Even though we aim to structure it more, nature is stronger.

What made you decide to go down the mixed track route for Balloons?
We always do a mix to illustrate our music projects, like for the live mix project, for Third Eye, and now for Balloons. For us, that's how this kind of music is most powerful: when it creates a journey or landscape.

With all of these different aspects of the company- haven't there been any fuck ups?
Well, one, that eventually became funny. When we received the promo of Balloons, we were so happy we started giving them out. Few days later we realised they had burned the wrong master! So we had to repress the CD's, using a different colour, and replace them one by one in the sleeve. So now there is a 'fake' album and a real one with different mixes and tracks on it. But we wouldn't be called Masomenos if we weren't that kind of so-so about things!Masomenos

About that, why did you call yourselves Masomenos? Was "Comme Ci, Comme Ça " already taken?
Coming back from Mexico. This lifestyle expression resonated with us, and still does.

What's the usual dynamic to writing and recording your music?
Happy accidents and building up the studio continuously

Is there another avenue you want to expand the Masomenos brand into? Theatre troupe, stand-up comedy perhaps?
Funny you say that, it has crossed our minds, but let's wait for the right time!

So what is the most unique part of working together?
Putting out our projects are our little magical moments. We don't know when or where it comes, but some days, or nights, we just spend hours talking and talking, and the next day, we both know where we have to go. These moments always make us fall in love again, and make us so proud of what we constructed together.

Pablo Casals sagte: Viele Leute scheinen von der fixen Idee besessen zu sein, dass nicht nur im Zirkus, sondern auch in der Musik, Malerei und Literatur nur noch die Clowns eine Chance haben. Da unser einziges Hobby darin besteht, mit georgischen Tanzbären im Rosa Tütü neue Tanzschritte einzustudieren und wir diese auch mal vor Publikum aufführen wollten war uns klar das Motto Zirkus muss herhalten. Schließlich schwindet jegliches Schamgefühl mit Maske dahin.
Den richtigen Manegengroove steuern übrigens niemand geringer als Masomenos bei. Ihre komischen Tierchen & Karikaturen passen auch in jedes Zirkuszelt und ihr Groove lässt aber auch den grimmigsten Bären einen kleinen Breakdance hinlegen.

Das Duo besteht aus zwei faszinierenden Charakteren. Sie Joan Costes, Grafikdesignerin und Djane, er Adrien de Maublanc, Produzent und Toningenieur. Beide sind ein außergewöhnlich kreatives Paar. Neben ihren mit beachtlichem Erfolg eigen produzierten Tracks, veröffentlicht auf dem hauseigenen Label „Welcome To Masomenos“, sind sie auch erfolgreich mit ihrer T-Shirt - Linie, die u.a. im eigenen Shop in Paris vertrieben wird. Inspiriert von Dance Musik im Ganzen und Minimal House und Techno im Speziellen, schrauben Joan & Adrien mit beachtlichem Erfolg sehr funktionale Tracks zusammen. Aufmerksamkeit erregten die Pariser mit ihrem Debütalbum „Live Mix“, das ein Hochgenuss für die Gehörgänge aus deepen, atmosphärischen und psychedelischen Beats war.

Supportet wird das dynamische Duo von den Pompadour Residents, Philipp Blecha & Thomas Grün und Do Easy Chef Andy Catana. Aber auch der zweite Floor hat viel zu bieten. Bodo Schwarz, Sunday Mornings Head Alecante und Wunderkind Laminat, welcher nicht nur weiß wann welche Platte zu spielen ist sondern auch erfolgreich die Feder schwingt für das „The Gap“ Magazin und mit seiner Veranstaltungsreihe „Filterqueen“ jedes mal den Vogel abschießt. Also rein in das Clown´s Kostüm und auf zum Zirkus. Hereinspaziert Hereinspaziert!
