Future Prophecies, aka Richard Animashaun Thomas & Tony Anthun are Drum&Bass artists from Norway. They perform as a DJ/live (Hybrid Session) act comprising of jazz musicians and DJs, culminating in a new sound breaking traditional musical barriers. Their extensive knowledge stems from relentless work as club DJs and jazz musicians throughout Norway, the rest of Europe and the States. Having had releases on Subtitles, Renegade Hardware, Breakbeat Kaos ,Moving Shadow, Certificate 18, Outbreak, Fabric Live 03 (DJ Hype), Boombox and Kickin, and remixes with Mari Boine/Universal and Jamelia/EMI, they are a force to be reckoned with. They are also starting their own label in the summer 2004. Richard Animashaun Thomas grew up at his Grandfather's house at Bjolsen, Oslo City, Norway. After some pressure from his Grandfather, who was a well known accordion musician, he started playing clarinet at the local marching band at the age of eleven. He soon switched to saxophone and after years of playing in different jazz, classical, pop and rock bands it finally led him to attending Music College in 1992 to do a four year study in jazz, pop and rock. This was also the time that Richard started doing real studio work, programming and experimental "techno-ish" live shows. After becoming tired of the traditional western styles, he sold everything (except his horn) and left for India, where he started studying Indian Classical music with the Bansuri, or Indian Flute. As he says himself: "I can't stay still. I have to experiment and learn new stuff. I have to be on the move or else everything stops. As with my music I have to explore new territories." After a year of hard work and a lot of Delhi Belly he went back to Norway. Tony was born in Oslo and brought up in Assbroken, a suburb in Oslo, and around '84 he started playing at the local youth club. He then started playing at weddings and friends' parties, and soon progressed on to playing in discos and at rave parties. After experimenting in different styles of music he got hooked on breaks, which resulted in him becoming a record collector. After realizing that the breaks records were mainly pieces of samples put together from different classic records he started making music. "At that time I thought it was just a case of putting together different samples, and the music would be there, but after years of producing and learning I found that there is so much more to it than that. To do what I wanted I soon understood that I needed somebody with knowledge of music theory. That's when I met Richard". Richard elaborates: "After doing a local gig with his new project Poetry, Tony was DJ-ing at the same club and approached me asking if I would be interested in doing some stuff on his project Huba Buba". It was after this that they began work together and soon experienced the magic of having musical knowledge and extensive DJing backgrounds, which resulted in several 12" releases on labels such as Boombox, Kickin, Black Jesus and Quiet Riot. It also led to them starting their own label, Domination, on which they released Poetry's EP. After some years of full studio work, playing regularly at local clubs and touring Europe and the States as sidemen with different Norwegian bands and projects, they started out by releasing material on Certificate 18 and Teebee's label, Subtitles. They are now situated in Norway. Their sets, usually when not straight DJ-ing, consist of turntablism, computers, and live acts on different settings working with drums, saxophone, human beat box, synths, vocalists and tabla. "Our music philosophy is not to have any boundaries. We try to make what feels good at any given moment. Our aim is to create a freedom to do what we want. Our influences come from all genres; r&b, pop, rock, jazz, indian, breakbeat, techno, house, and we believe people shouldn't forget where they are coming from. A lot of people out there diss other styles, even before they really have checked it out, just to follow some kind of trend. We feel that there is a lot of good (and bad) music in all genres - so why miss out on the good stuff just for the sake of fitting in with the scene? We try to blend all kind of styles in our music, be it saxophone, flute, vocals, tabla, guitar and so on. But in the end whatever we do, the main thing is to achieve a kind of sensation, a feel that this is it - the moment". And now Future Prophecies are here to challenge the way drum'n'bass is heard - something so many are afraid to do. subfocus.... With several tracks to his name all made in the space of the last twelve months 2004 has been a massive year for Nick aka Sub Focus: the year has seen him breakthrough in unprecedented fashion armed with the likes of the technically astounding "Acid Test", the simple yet devastatingly effective "Strobe", the lively "Get on Up" and the altoghether awesome "X-Ray". In a matter of months, he has gone from being one of many wannabe producers to become a permanent fixture of the award winning Ram Records family. Artists like Sub Focus are what "Best Breakthrough Producer" awards are made for. Even though Nick has been obsessed with dance music, both its creation and its culture for a large chunk of his formative years, his first experience with making music came from playing bass in a rock band at school. However his involvement with the band didn't last very long as on hearing dance music Nick was totally blown away by it's diversity and the variety of sounds on offer. Consequently he decided that the tone of rock music didn't satisfy as he felt it to be far too limited, in contrast Nick found the unlimited tonal possibilities of dance music to be extremely exciting. Particular music that got him hooked included; General Levy's "Incredible" and most things from Prodigy's early years. Nick actually started making beats at the tender age of thirteen on an old Acorn computer, although to begin with he was just messing around he quickly found his passion and this light hearted hobby gradually became an obsession. It's important to note that until recently Nick has been entirely self taught, his only aid coming from a whole host of software instruction manuals which he enjoyed reading from cover to cover. Things didn't really start to happen for him until last year when he made a conscious decision to take his production process extremely seriously. Nick enrolled in a renowned sound engineering course in London's East End, where he found himself polishing up his self taught skills, whilst also going deeper into the realms of truly understanding the concept of sound. Eventually Nick managed to make a few things that he felt proud of so he began to give out some CDs for his friends to listen to, only looking for a bit of feedback. However, a certain friend decided to take one of these "Don't Play Them to Anyone Else" CDs and give one to award winning DJ and Ram Record's label owner ANDY C. On hearing the tracks Andy not only saw talent but he saw a release, within hours Nick had the phone call and within weeks Nick had his first release on Ram's much respected sister imprint Frequency: a 12" featuring "Down the Drain" with "Hotline" on the flip. With this new found confidence in mind; in recent months Nick went in the studio and rolled out three brilliant bits of production in quick succession. To Nick's delight all of them got the stamp of approval; "Acid Test" and "Get On Up" will act as his follow up release on Frequency whilst his brilliant "Strobe" is to be included on Chapter Six of the Ram Raiders series on Ram Records. All the above tracks have been really well received by the scene's top flight DJs but to Nick's surprise press and radio have been in support too; they've all received regular airplay on both Grooverider's BBC Radio 1 Drum & Bass show and Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 prime time specialist show. All that remains to be said is remember the name and watch this space. MC Foxy (New Breed Rec. / UK) Back in '91, I used to rave at a club called Monday club run by Ratpack. There I met Crazylegs, and he encouraged me to pick up the mic and the rest as you say is history!!. Like so many other artists in this scene, I too started out in '91, but my first real experience of the industry came courtesy of my cousin Rodney P. At the time, I followed him on tour with London posse who were supporting queen Latifah on her UK dates.That was my first taste of the game!!!! In '92 we joined kool fm(July 13th at the very 1st jungle fever) We remained there for 4 years playing various timeslots with our set which we called "Tha Downtown Show". My time with Kool FM provided me with a vast amount of experience for which 'ill always be greatful (big up Eastman & crew). In '96, I started working with Nicky blackmarket & stevie hyper d(r.i.p.) Travelling up and down the country getting to meet lots of promoters. Gradually the bookings started to come and it got real crazy after that!. 97,you could say that's when New Breed started because that was the first time Fatman D and I performed together! Now New Breed consists of myself, Fatman D, Shortston, Eksman and Herbzy, Av,Kasha, Crazylegs, Wreckless and Dazzler. Between '97 and now has been crazy and I love it; so I'm gonna list some places and countries I've represented drum and bass. p.s. The future.. Who knows! Zum ersten mal auf 2 Floors!!! |
