SONARLAB TRIBUTE TO JOHN PEEL

Sónar 2005 wishes to pay special tribute to the world’s most influential radio dj and staunchest advocate of the festival: John Peel.

He died 25 October 2004, leaving a great void in the music world. For over 30 years on the radio waves of BBC1, Peel taught us about music, unveiling the talents of innumerable bands: from Roxy Music and The Velvet Underground to T.Rex and his beloved Undertones to influential groups on the recent electronic music scene such as Boards of Canada, Autechre and Apparat.

Peel maintained closed ties with Sónar following his first visit to the festival in 2001 in search of emerging artists in SonarLab. Two years later, he would offer another taste of his knowledge in a memorable set at the Sónar 10th anniversary party, scratching at the turntable with his friend Jeff Mills. SonarLab became his favourite venue, one which he never failed to visit in subsequent years, like a fan seeking out the latest bands and most interesting acts on the international scene.

For this reason, this year’s SonarLab is being held in honour of John Peel and his tremendous relevance in the music world. People who were close to Peel’s ecclectic and progressive spirit, artists like Rough Trade, Noise Factory, and Regular will drop by the stage, as well as representatives of newly formed labels to present their catalogues. Peel never missed the occasion to see new bands that he would later broadcast on his show on BBC1.

Our most sincere tribute to John Peel. Rest in peace.

ZITAT
A variety of styles and acts for Sónar by Night

As every year, Sónar by Night boasts the most popular and danceable acts of the festival, held on three distinct stages: SonarClub, SonarPark and SonarPub.

On the first of these some of the biggest names in contemporary dance electronic music will appear: from the indispensable The Chemical Brothers, whose fifth album has recently been released, to the newest sensation on the European techno scene, Dutchman Joris Voorn, along with band of the year Lcd Soundsystem, the Dewaele brother’s band Soulwax, Luke Vibert’s personal vision of acid, and contemporary classics Jeff Mills and Miss Kittin.

Next door in SonarPub you can enjoy the electronic melody of the Areal label, with the minimalist force of Canadians Minus, headed by Richie Hawtin and Mathew Jonson; the iconoclastic Mu; the new project by Ralph Lawson, 2020 Soundsystem; the exotic couple TowaTom (Atom Heart and Towa Tei); the synthetic melodies of Lontano; and the infallible sessions of James Murphy, Mousedown and Fergie.

Friday night you can delight in SonarPark acts of a very distinctive sort, with originality and creative liberty as the common denominators. Roisin Murphy and Jamie Lidell will share the stage with the hooligan-like minimalist punk of Soft Pink Truth, activist techno pop of Le Tigre, or a special session by charismatic Martin L. Gore, member of Depêche Mode. Meanwhile, Saturday night will highlight the enormous influence hip-hop has had on contemporary music, including the performance of two of the most influential groups in the genre: De la Soul, on the international level, and Sólo Los Solo, on the national level. Also to be featured are artists whose music represents the assimilation of hip-hop, performers as diverse as Duplex (Edan & Insight), M.I.A., Mark One & Virus Syndicate and Dj Yoda, as well as a lesson in turntablism by the masterful Cut Chemist.

In addition to all of this, the finale of the festival will highlight such heavyweights as Laurent Garnier, Ellen Allien, 2 Many Djs and the emerging Diplo, as well as visuals created by Casey Reas, Lia and the Venezuelan group No-Domain.

Scheduled artists:

The Chemical Brothers (GB): For no less than 13 years, Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands have been the indisputable kings of a new form of pop which they themselves created. Powerful beats bathed in rock, hip-hop, trance and soul. Everything counts when they take control. As it was in the beginning, as it is now, with “Push The Button,” so will it be forever.

Lcd Soundsystem (US): In 2002, James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy revolutionized half of the world’s dance floors with the hit “Losing My Edge”, and since then the duo hasn’t looked back. Their upbeat, clever concoction of disco, punk, and rock has carried them and the DFA label to the pinnacle of success. In short, the group of the year. Indispensable.

Martin L. Gore (GB): It is still said that he is the spark and the pillar of the indispensable band Depeche Mode. Today, with his solo career at the top thanks to the impact of "Counterfeit", the genius from Basildon proves that he’s still got a lot to say about contemporary pop.

Miss Kittin (SW): A very healthy sense of humour and an idea of electro and techno-pop that goes beyond pure revivalism have made Caroline Herve one of the most relevant figures on the European circuit. Electro sexy, vibrant, intelligent, with the undeniable added charm of Miss Kittin’s voice and charisma.

Cut Chemist (US): While the name Lucas Macfadden might sound familiar in conjunction with the prestigious groups Ozomatli and Jurassic 5 and in sessions with Dj Shadow, Macfadden’s expertise at the turntable is boundless enough that his nickname strikes a resounding chord on its own. This is due to the fact that Cut Chemist is simply one of the most highly regarded scratchers on the planet, as he makes undoubtedly clear on “The Litmus Test” and each time he sidles up to the turntable.

The Soft Pink Truth (US): Sidekick of Björk, creative half of Matmos, graduate in Renaissance literature and eternal provocateur. What more could you ask of Drew Daniel? Possibly, "Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Soft Pink Truth?", his brilliant second record.

De La Soul (US): Starting with the mythical "3 Feet High and Rising" until the most recent "The Grind Date", Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove and Pasemaster Mase have written several important pages in the history of rap. After 16 years, this NY trio still has the status of a hip-hop legend, loaded with positivism, jazz roots, a message and good vibrations.

Soulwax (BE):
Re-mixers of luxury and responsible for the electronic sound of “Any Minute Now”, brothers David and Stephen Dewaele seem to have made an effort over the years to sabotage any attempt to describe exactly what they do. Soulwax, a parallel project to 2Many DJ’s, which the Dewaele brothers share with Stefaan Van Leuven and Steve Slingeneyer, also defies categorization. Absolute originality and success.

Ellen Allien (DE): The founder and flagship of Berlin-based label B-Pitch Control is always a sure thing when it comes to quality, thanks to an unconventional approach to the dance floor in which the electro of corrosive basses and the most imaginative techno insinuate new, unexplored paths.

Richie Hawtin (CA): At this M-nus gathering the father of the creature had to be present... The grand master of techno minimalism takes the reins in order to show once again who is in control: repetitive electronic, straightforward Detroit techno of the first order and, above all, simplicity . M-nus is more.

Duplex aka Edan & Insight (US): Edan & Insight is a hip hop super duet formed by two authentic “3-in-1” (they produce, rhyme and scratch) who are described as geniuses by the public and critics. Both have launched records in 2005: one, “The Blast Radius”, the other, “The Beauty and the Beat”. Together this pair of visionaries is able to trigger a powerful hurricane of skills on the stage.

Joris Voorn (NL): The success of “Muted Trax” and “Lost Memories” resulted in the red carpet to the VIP lounge of international techno being rolled out for Joris Voorn. And it doesn’t stop there. Voorn, sponsored by Technasia, has been rubbing shoulders with industry heavyweights in the wake of his acclaimed LP “Future History”, with tracks that bounces between electro, breaks, and, above all, good techno.

Jeff Mills (US): Without the non-stop work of Jeff Mills over the last two decades, techno would have another flavour. That’s because this pioneer among pioneers is responsible, in large part, for what today we understand as “techno”. Intense sets of electronic percussion charged with meaning and physicality played at full throttle as only Mills knows how.

Ada (DE): It has been said that Michaela Dippel could be the tech-house version of The Strokes. Similarities aside, Dippel’s melodic tracks and spacious rhythms drink from a inexhaustible well of tricks and ideas derived from pop, rock, and popular electronic, light years away from the rest.

Mark One + Virus Syndicate (GB): Out of his studio in Sheffield, Mark One became one of the pioneers of British drum’n’bass, yet his restless creative mind soon resulted in his becoming a key figure on the grime scene. Presently he plays with the Manchester-based group Virus Syndicate, whose sound is an amalgam of garage, breaks, dubstep and whatever remains in between.

Mathew Jonson (CA): His work for labels such as Perlon and Itiswhatitis opened the door to success for this young musician from Vancouver. That’s why he is part of the Minus family, where he continues to cultivate his passion for cosmic house, minimal techno, jazz and electronic academia.

Laurent Garnier (FR): Many indulge in eclecticism but few are able to do it as well as Monsieur Garnier. Only he is capable of combining reggae, rock, house, drum'n'bass, acid, hip-hop and techno to arrive at sets that make history.

Dj Yoda (GB): Cut-and-paste taken to its ultimate extreme. A mammoth sonic collage in which INXS and Aerosmith are mixed flawlessly with an assortment of classic and contemporary hip-hop. All accompanied by visuals that are not merely eye candy. Q Magazine included Dj Yoda in its list of “The 10 Djs you must see before you die”.

James Murphy (US): Murphy’s genius has been associated with the triumph of such names as The Rapture, the DFA label, and LCD Soundsystem, a personal project. But this New Jersey native has much more at his fingertips. An infinite range of rhythms that only he could combine with such perfection. From house to the new wave of New York rock in the blink of an eye.

Mu (JP): MU is in the midst of a world tour with the hit “Paris Hilton” and the album “Out of Breach”, sequel to “Afro Finger and Gel”, one of the big surprises of 2003. Maurice Fulton, producer of house and one half of the group, describes the invention as punk music you can dance to. Mutsumi Kanamori, performer and the other half of the project, provides the glamour. Disco-punk at its most chic.

Diplo (US): Wes Pentz has been one of the main promoters of the Dirty south sound thanks to the Hollertronix sessions. But above all he is Diplo, author of “Florida”, producer of M.I.A. and Kano and an excellent remixer. Intelligent hip hop, well produced, but never losing sight of the dance floor.

2 Many dj’s (BE): Bootlegs, plunderphonia, cut'n'paste... The Dewaele brothers (Steven and David) know how to combine the strangest sounds and the most extravagant rhythms to achieve the craziest party tracks in the world. Progressive rock with Madonna, hip hop with cheesy eighties. The true masters of sampling.

Luke Vibert (GB): The genius from Cornwall continues to divide his inestimable talent between the breakbeat excursions of Wagon Christ and his never-hidden weakness for acid house and its derivatives, as is apparent on “Lovers’ Acid”, his latest record for Planet-Mu. Retro-futurism at its most.

Lontano (ES):
"Chroma", the debut LP of the Valencia couple, was preceded by excellent reviews of their maxis and the warm reception they enjoyed in Germany. Why? Because of their exquisite Detroitesque techno, perfectly controlled and focusing on harmonies and melodies.

2020 Soundsystem feat. Ralph Lawson, Dubble D and Silver City (GB): Danny Ward and Fernando Pulichino (members of Silver City) and Julian Sanza (Double D) join the always indispensable Ralph Lawson in their original house quartet. The electronic foundation of 100% 2020 Vision is resurrected thanks to live percussion, bass and keyboards.

Sólo Los Solo (ES):
Juan Sólo and his inseparable partner Griffi are veterans of the national scene. Without them the word rap wouldn’t mean anything in Spain. The most progressive vision of hip-hop in the country, with personality, roots and no concessions whatsoever. As they say on their last record "Todo el mundo lo sabe", or “Everyone knows”.
