[ studio12 ] THOMAS FRAME   ALEX SMOKE [ soma | vakant | glasgow | scotland ] Paradolia is defined as the human ability to creatively perceive coherent images in randomness. This is an unusual word by anyone’s standard but then Alex Menzies (aka Mr Smoke) is an artist very far from the usual. A Rorschach test this is not, more a sonic experiment that explores the parameters of Alex Smoke’s potent psyche. Alex remarks on its significance “I guess the album is the pattern and the tracks the randomness as I didnt have a plan to tie everything together. I also think it describes really well the appeal of music that at first sounds random but makes sense as a whole.” It is almost twelve months since Soma unleashed ‘Incommunicado’, Smoke’s masterful debut. Lauded by critics upon its release in March 2005 it portrayed his instinctive maturity in constructing emotional, deep grooves with intricate production techniques. ‘Incommunicado’ enveloped a myriad of influences including dub, electro, grime and minimal techno. One of the album highlights, ‘Don’t See The Point’ demonstrated his desire to incorporate his own vocals in innovative ways, while voicing his frustrations at the current political climate. This pivotal release augmented the fact that his music was not confined to the dancefloor and could not be pigeonholed by genre. With ‘Paradolia’ he has taken this blueprint and pushed the boundaries for a composition that is swollen with ingenuity and experimentation. The development of his unique sound is clear to hear, crafting a beguiling symmetry of melancholy and melody. The result is an a listening experience that is more cohesive and inspirational than his debut outing. As he reflects, “I guess Im happier with my production now. The other big difference is that Incommunicado covered 4 years, whereas this album is entirely within a year so it probably hangs together better.” Like its predecessor, Alex has once again interpreted styles of music that make an impact on him. With ‘Paradolia’ he has gone a step further, welding disparate genre’s into mindbending opus’s. The most ambitious track on the album is ‘Prima Materia’. Here he unites his two early influences of classical music (he is classically trained in the cello and piano) and early house to detonate a symphonic explosion that sounds like nothing else around. He includes his own vocals on ‘Never Want To See You Again’, ‘Make My Day’ and ‘Anima’, each of which utilises bamboozling production techniques to devastating effect. With an intrinsic understanding of how to rock the dancefloor, he has created the magnificent ‘Meany’, the first track to be released as a single (twelve inch version comes with a Matt John remix). This live-set staple is a twisted technoid cut of stuttering disorder that will erupt in the club. Another album seducer is the majestic ‘Snider’, a shimmering techno groove that nods to the minimal sound and his love of classic Detroit. Album opener ‘Persona’ is prime example of the deep and pulsing Alex Smoke sound that we know and love. The personal nature of his music is evident throughout, on tracks like the reflective ‘A Moment To Myself’, the emotional ‘Something’s Gone’ and the fragile beauty of ‘Left Drift’ his wistful sound resonates. With the razor-edge beats of ‘We Like It Insipid’ he draws attention to his dislike of certain aspects of the world around us. “The title refers to the lowest common denominator tastes of the world as a whole, from Macdonalds to the Daily Mail to every other fucking flacid appendage of modern society.” His social conscience remains intact. 2005 has been the year which has witnessed this young producer’s rapid ascent through the ranks of the techno elite. Since the release of ‘Incommunicado’ he has been booked to play the clubs and festivals of the UK, Europe and beyond. Alex reflects, “It’s all been slightly surreal, because everything has happened so fast, but its obviously been brilliant. The main thing that Ive found hard to get used to is not seeing so much of my friends at the weekends so next year Im taking more time off.” His coveted releases on Berlin label Vakant have cemented his club credentials and found their way into boxes and laptops of innovative dj’s everywhere. zum ersten mal in wien haben sich 4 verschiedene veranstalter zusammengeschlossen und bespielen den freitag im sass (1010 wien / karlsplatz 1) . das ganze nennt sich sass fridays und die 4 clubabende : 1. Freitag - DeFusion (von Karl Möstl) 2. Freitag - Jack (von der Deephousemaffia) 3. Freitag - Dizzy (der Jazzclub von Fm4 Mann Kristian Davidek mit Gästen wie Patrick Pulsinger, Peter Kruder, Frank Hoffmann, usw.) 4. Freitag - Lost in Music (der House/Techno/Disco Club von Ex-Klein Records Mann Rainer Klang - mit nationalen und internationalen Gästen - der neue Club nach seinem "Private Dancer") sass fridays im ersten wiener bezirk existiert seit kurzer zeit eine neue adresse für gepflegte abendgestaltung mit tanzmöglichkeit. direkt am karlsplatz im wunderschönen Sass, daß punkto lokaldesign in wien seinesgleichen sucht und als draufgabe auch noch eine der wohlklingendsten soundanlagen sein eigen nennt. dort startet im september eine neue freitag abend clubschiene die nachtschwärmer, party people und heavy dancer anziehen will und als gegenleistung musikalische leckerbissen bietet. Zum ersten mal haben sich dafür 4 verschiedene Veranstalter zusammen getan - einen roten faden soll es geben - die qualtität. die angesagtesten österreichischen und gleichgesinnten internationalen djs werden die sass fridays bespielen. musikalisch geht die reise von house, techno und disco bei jack (deephousemafia) und lost in music (rainer klang) bis zu jazz im dizzy (christian davidek) und electronic freestyle bei karl möstl's defusion. wahrscheinlich eine der ersten adressen wo man sich die freitag nächte diesen herbst/winter um die ohren schlagen kann. www.myspace.com/sassfridays www.sassvienna.at |

September darf man sich auf eine weitere Ausgabe von BACCHATIO im wiener VIPER-ROOM freuen. Diesmal hat sich die BALLISTIC BREAKZ-Crew mit maniax.at zusammengetan um ein weiteres Drum and Bass-Gemetzel auf die Tagesordnung zu rufen. Mit dabei sind die DREADBANGERS, vertreten durch KOS, von den RUCKUS KEEPERS, und SYNCHRONIZA, sowie WEN-SHIZ, Gründer von E-LASTIC und der legendären Party-Reihe PRIME TIME. Unterstützung kommt von MC ESSENTIAL von der RASSELBANDE. BALLISTIC BREAKZ wird eine feine BSB-Session von FROZEN.SECRET b2b LUKE.DELICATE und OBS.NEUROSIS b2b M.T.C. präsentieren. Smash TV aka Holger Zilske 2001 erste smash tv vö erscheint bei bpitch control mit dem titel "electronic boy" (bpc020). es folgt ein remix für toktok`s smash hit "missy queen gonna die" sowie ein remix für sylvie marks "baby take me a little bit higher" (bpc037). mindlab release auf salo. smash tv „now" erblickt das licht der welt. erster smash tv gig im wmf. ausserdem wird ellen allien s „stadtkind" (bpc021) veröffentlicht. holger arbeitet an diversen remixprojekten mit ellen (u.a. malaria, golden boy & miss kittin, peter licht) 2002 das erste smash tv album „electrified" erscheint im februar 2002 auf bpitch control. der song „nobody" wird mit remixen von barbara morgenstern, modeselektor und grom als maxi ausgekoppelt. das video zu "nobody" trasht und flasht! ausserdem entsteht in zusammenarbeit mit ellen allien ihre maxi „erdbeermund" (bpc041) holger arbeitet mir ellen allien an ihrem zweiten album berlinette", es folgt die gemeinsam-tour im herbst. auftritte während und abseits der tour, unter anderem im tresor, polar tv, wmf, musik und maschine, panorama bar, ultraschall (münchen), casino, polar tv, bartofar (paris), primavera sound (barcelona), melt tour, neue heimat (stuttgart), hotel reiss (kassel), velvet (leipzig) 2003 ellens album „berlinette" bpc065 wird fertig produziert und releast, inklusive der auskopplungen „trashscape" und „alles sehen". smash tv remixt goldenboy und miss kittin's „autopilot". beginn und abschluss der arbeit am zweiten smash tv album. auftritte unter anderem im tresor, maria, watergate,, centre pompidou (paris), festival music-allemand (paris), electronica en abril (madrid),rgb melkweg (amsterdam). release der single "hi-jacked" (bpc79) im dezember michael schmidt steigt ende des jahres aus zeitmangel aus. 2004 im mai erscheint das zweite album "bits for breakfast" (bpc087). als gast-künstler hat sich holger zilske raz ohara mit ins studio genommen, um den track "queen of men" aufzunehmen. dieser track ist zugleich die single-auskopplung (bpc091) mit remixen von kiki, dave tarrida und smash tv. von mai bis august geht es auf bits for breakfast-tour in europa. ein besonders highlight der tour war sein live-act auf dem benicassim-festival in spanien, der im rahmen eines bpitch showcase stattfand. ende des jahres finden sich ellen und holger wieder zusammen im studio ein, um ellens drittes album "thrills" (bpc106) aufzunehmen. 2005 ellen alliens album „thrills" erscheint inklusive diverser singleauskopplungen („magma", „your body is my body, "down"). im februar und märz geht es gemeinsam mit den anderen bpc-künstlern auf camping-tour. im märz erscheint seine neue smash tv single "techtechtalk" und holger geht auf 2wöchige usa-tour und spiel und spielt und spielt ... 2006 auch dieses jahr im märz wieder eine neue smash tv veröffentlichung: "air/earth" (bpc122).raz oharas fireball remix aus dem jahr 2004 wird veröffentlicht sowie im juni eine weitere ep - "yellow asteroids" (bpc130). 2007 "enduro disko" erscheint im juni auf anja schneiders neu gegründetem label leena. www.bpitchcontrol.de/artist/11 DJ Soulglo  Philipp "Soulglo" Haffner ist eine Hälfte des Wiener Electro Duos Microthol. Bereits in den frühen Neunzigern sammelte und spielte er Techno Platten. Bekannt wurde er nach der Veröffentlichung der ersten Microthol Records. | Specials/Infos | Alleluyark! ARK ist der Künstler, der das filterdiscoverseuchte Frankreich 1997 erstmals mit der reinen Lehre des Minimal Techno infiziert hat. ARK steht für die Möglichkeit des Funk im Techno. Der George Clinton und Norman Whitfield Verehrer bringt knackige Dancefloor-Monster ebenso wie experimentelle Klangbilder oder entrückten Techno-Funk. Er gehört gleichzeitig zum Schrägsten, das die aktuelle Elektronik zu bieten hat und zum Enegiereichsten, das neben Ed Banger und Ark-Partner Mr. Oizo aus Frankreichs unerforschten Herdonistenbunkern kommt. Über die Qualität von jemandem, der einerseits gleichzeitig u.a. auf Perlon, PIAS, Karat, Boogizm und Circus veröffentlichen darf und andererseits noch dazu der Lieblingsmusiker von Matthew Herbert und Riccardo Villalobos ist, braucht ohnehin nicht viel gesagt werden. Kenny Larkin Kenny Larkin is one of the chief innovators of Detroit's so called 'second wave' of techno producers from Detroit. He began his music career in 1990. After serving two years in the U.S. Air Force repairing computers, Larkin returned to Detroit to pursue stand up comedy. During his pursuit, he, along with other Detroit club goers, witnessed the birth of a new genre of music at local clubs. What came to be called “Detroit Techno,” thumped in clubs like; The City Club, The Majestic Theatre, The Shelter, and the legendary Music Institute. The latter considered home base for the bumping, sultry, emotive, yet almost romantic style of club music that rose out of urban plight, desperation, and decay. Larkin mostly frequented The Shelter, where he soon hooked up with Richie Hawtin, who was one of the club’s resident dj’s, and the two became good friends. While driving around the city at night, they stumbled onto a local Detroit radio mix show. The dj creating the mind-blowing mixes that changed both of their lives was none other Derrick May, or “Mayday,” his call-name on the radio. May along with others, inspired both Larkin, and Hawtin to pursue this new form of music. When Hawtin formed +8 with John Acquaviva, Larkin released his first two singles. But, it wasn’t until 1992, when he founded his own label, Art of Dance, that he came into his signature sound. Under his “Dark Comedy” moniker, Larkin created ‘War of the Worlds,’ which went on to become a seminal dance floor techno classic for Derrick May’s Transmat Records, of which Larkin licensed the project to. After contributing the exquisitely beautiful and sublime tracks ‘Serena X’ (under the name Yennek) for the compilation Panic in Detroit and 'Tedra' on the hugely innovative Virtual Sex (Buzz) compilation, Kenny was pushed to the forefront of techno's soulful elite. In 1994, Larkin shrewdly carved out his own classic sound when he signed to Warp Records, and released his first album, entitled Azimuth. The album was hailed by European and U.S. press as one of the most original techno albums to date. A few quotes: “Azimuth is one of the most imaginative and original techno albums yet.” MUSIC WEEK “Delightful, pure Detroit-style techno. Melodic, emotive and, like so much great U.S. techno, almost jazz-like in places. Larkin is a man with his finger on the fast forward button of music’s future.” SELECT “A masterpiece. This LP of intelligent Detroit techno is an upcoming classic.” STREETSOUNDS Street Sound magazine later voted Azimuth as one of the top 50 Techno CD’s of all time. Larkin’s music career seemed very bright, but tragedy struck when on November 17, 1994, he almost lost his life after being shot in his suburban Detroit home by two unknown assailants. Luckily, the bullet missed vital organs, but it sliced through his lower abdomen. After 12 hours of surgery, Larkin was in critical condition, but pulled through. Hospitalized only for 6 days, Larkin began touring just two weeks after he was discharged from the hospital to support his new album, Metaphor, which was released on R&S Records in February of 1995. The release earned him more accolades as a leader in electronic music. "This is electronic soul music, full of human feeling and warmth" MixMag "A juxtaposition of polished classic Detroit and quirky jazz-inspired innovation. At times very minimal and ambient, other times well informed by house, Kenny's warm dance beats hit in just the right places at just the right time.” I-D Metaphor was nominated for best electronic album of the year in Keyboard Magazine. In his hometown, Metro Times voted Larkin ‘Best Techno Artist of The Year’ at it’s yearly music awards. Since the release of Azimuth, Larkin has traveled over 2 million miles around the globe, dj’ing and playing live at the biggest Festivals in Europe, some which had him doing his electronic performance in front of as many as 25,000 fans. In addition to his own productions, Larkin lent his melodic sensibilities to various artists. He has done remix work for Carl Craig, Inner City, Charm Farm, L.A. Synthesis, and most notably, Sade. Although a bootleg, the remix of ‘Surrender’ sold 10,000 in 3 weeks. Apparently, Sade wasn’t amused. Her attorney contacted Larkin and demanded they stop selling the single, or face litigation. Larkin agreed, and stopped distributing the single. Larkin’s remix for Charm Farm entitled, ‘Superstar’, shot up the charts in France, helping establish the band in Europe in the dance scene. |
